Lawan Calls Gowon A Unique Nigerian Hero by opportunes: 8:16am On Oct 21, 2019
Senate President Ahmad Lawan yesterday Sunday felicitated with former Head of State Gen. Yakubu Gowon on his 85th birthday, describing him as “a unique Nigerian hero”. In a statement by his Special Adviser (Media), Ola Awoniyi, Lawan thanked God for the grace of health, longevity and unblemished integrity “evident in Gowon’s exemplary life.”

He recalled that Gowon assumed the leadership of Nigeria as a youth and at a time the country was at the precipice of disintegration. “In very difficult circumstances, General Gowon rallied his troops and indeed all Nigerians to defend and preserve the unity and territorial integrity of their country. He did this through his inspirational call of ‘Go-On-With-One Nigeria’ during the unfortunate civil war, and after it, through his policy of ‘No Victor, No Vanquished and the three ‘Rs’ programme of Reconciliation, Reconstruction and Rehabilitation.

“It is to his eternal credit that Nigerians from across the deep divide embraced themselves after the conflict and again integrated as one nation specially blessed by God. “Even after exiting power, General Gowon has been unwavering in promoting the unity, peace and prosperity of the country he loves so much,” Lawan said.

Gowon actually didn't manage Nigeria well. Had he managed it well, that war wouldn't have happened.

Thank you. Exactly my opinion. Had he executed the Aburi accord the Eastern people wont have agitated for secession. Their people were getting killed in the North and he didnt do anything. That what the root caused of the war.

What is Nigeria benefiting from the socalled ONE NIGERIA ?

Exploitation of Niger delta resources !

Unitary Structure that impedes on our economic development !

Regional or ethnic struggle for political powers at the federal centre.

I DO NOT AGREE TO THE ONE NIGERIA SLOGAN as propagated by the likes of General Yakubu Gown (rtd )

It is simply undemocratic.

We should copy better model around the world like BRITAIN AND THE EU on the Brexit issues.

Not this BLIND ONE NIGERIA sing song !

We are deceiving ourselves in Nigeria.

IT IS ALSO ABOUT TIME NIGERIA START CALLING FOR A REFERENDUM TO TEST OUR SO CALLED UNITY !

Please don't distort history. The root cause of the war was the January 15, 1966 coup - that was the day of infamy - and the gloating in the North, of all places, shortly after, by the easterners there on the streets, who were seen as the main beneficiaries and supporters of the coup, to begin with. It was extreme humiliation of the Arewa people by even the ordinary Igbo person there on the streets. For instance, they trampled on the photos of the Northern political and military leaders who were predominantly murdered during the coup, there on the streets of the North. (I was in Jos then.)

The main trigger of the actual war, was the invasion of the then Midwest region by Col. Ojukwu's ill-fated army, even before any shot was fired at the "rebellion from the Eastern region" by the Federal Government, or war declared. Simple.

You are wrong. I guess it is true what they say until a lion has an history writer. the story of the hunt will always cast the hunter in good light. Ojukwu didn't set out to invade the Midwest. The man was just trying to do what he thought was in the best interest for his people. His people were getting slaughter in the North and the central government were not doing anything about it. If you call the January 1966 as a day of infamy what will you call all the subsequent coups. The five majors that carried out the January 1966 coup were not all from the East there were some people from the Western region that participate in the coup. It was just an easy narration to cast the coup as an Eastern coup. So let's just be clear.

I guess you've been spoiled by the mostly eastern narrative of the events of the war... that's one reason I can think of for you to characterize my writing as that by a "lion" from nowhere, for instance, whatever that means, lol.

And funny how you easily emotionalize the unprovoked military invasion of the then very peaceful Midwest region that was clearly unprepared for war, as essentially 'self defense' by Col. Ojukwu. Did he not so sow the wind? People such as yourself will always form ostrich, are in self denial, and never take responsibility for their actions; the fault is always that of the other side. Col. Ojukwu made a choice with his two eyes wide open and Nigeria as a whole paid dearly for it. Earlier, the January coup plotters had murdered, in cold blood, all the major and significant political and military leaders of all the three other regions and spared those of their own sole, smallest, predominantly Igbo-controlled region, and you have the effrontery to say it was not an Igbo coup?

Unfortunately for us all, those who had wanted to impose a Unitary form of government on the country (Gen. Aguiyi-Ironsi even ultimately proclaimed it!) because they thought they were not yet sufficiently or totally in charge but wanted to totally Lord it over and subjugate all regions (the purpose and goal of the infamy,) ended up costing the country dearly. They will never succeed - and will face greater disappointments - should they try it once more.

In the meantime, you can carry on with your 'in-the-end ill-fated' side of the narrative and hope you won't always encounter another 'strange lion' from nowhere, na you sabi. Be rest assured, though, that the fair narrative will always be held somewhere and prevail in the end; and all propaganda that took root in the unfortunate war and have been mixed with emotional bile that persist through these days, will not change a thing for the better. Such emotional bile will continue to burn bridges, in fact. Make of that what you may.
