2011: Don’t field women as presidential, governorship candidates.Group warns parties

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has warned political parties in the country against fielding women for the highest posts at both the presidential and governorship levels.

Here: Dr AbdulLateef Adegbite, Secretary General Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) presents the best dressed award of MIMBAR Nursery and Primary school, Ibadan, to Young Abdur-Rahman Balogun, while his mother, Dr (Mrs) Morufat Balogun looks on recently during the award ceremony of the institution.

MURIC director, Dr, Is-haq Akintola, in a statementin Lagos said any political party that ignored this warning stood the risk of losing the votes of Muslims to other parties.

The group, while noting that preparations for the next year’s general election had begun, said  already new political parties were being formed and registered while aspirants were emerging across the country for the presidential, gubernatorial, the National Assembly as well as state Houses of Assembly, noting that already some Muslim women had emerged as aspirants.

According to MURIC, Islam permits Muslims to engage in politics, to vote and be voted for, to exercise their civic rights and to fulfill their civic responsibilities.

“All rulers, from the President of Nigeria to the chairmen of local government councils are proxies of Allah. Islam holds that leaders will be held accountable for their deeds and misdeeds on the Day of Judgment,” it said.

It, therefore, stated that Muslim politicians should play the game according to the dictates of Islam, not their whims and caprices.

It urged Muslim women not to shy away from politics, saying that female Muslim aspirants should pursue their legitimate and Islam-compliant dreams with vigour.

MURIC also called on the husbands of such aspirants to support their wives morally and financially.

However, it reminded them of an important proviso in their engagement in politics, namely, that “a Muslim woman is not permitted to aspire to be president of Nigeria or governor of a state”, adding that she was, however, free to contest for the posts of vice-president or deputy governor.

It said that the wrong impression must not be created that Muslim women are second class citizens.

It appealed to female Muslim aspirants who were eyeing the highest political posts in the country or in their states to reconsider their stands and respect their faith.

It is wrong to say that Women cant aspire for any post in the land.

In another place, the Holy Qur'an says:

", and women have rights similar to those against them in a just manner,, "

Holy Qur'an (2:228)

It says, in a just manner. Can you explain that?. In a just manner means that men must be on top of any position they aspire to because it will be unjust to men if they allow women rule them.

Did you look at the pictures at all?. Are the women not happy with that injuction? Did you see as that lady in the picture is smiling?. . Muslim women are not complaining, it's you Christian men who are complaining for them because you probably have an ulterior motive against muslim women. Don't use political offices to lure holy muslim women out from their husband's grip so you can do some  nasty things to them.

Quran 3;64.

Say (O Muhammad ): "O people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians): Come to a word that is just between us and you, that we worship none but Allah, and that we associate no partners with Him, and that none of us shall take others as lords besides Allah. Then, if they turn away, say: "Bear witness that we are Muslims."

How is this quotation related to the fact that Nigerian Muslim women are not allowed to become presidents and governors in the 21st C?

Is this quota made to insult islam? I'm not getting the point of it.

I'm a muslim and though I completely disagree that Islam forbids women taking leadership positions, I personally feel that women generally should focus more on building the home which is the foundation of every society rather than involving themselves in partisan politics particular the Nigerian version of it with all the ugly things we witness everyday.

kyrgyzstani Leader if IM not mistaken is a Muslim Woman(she's not dead yet).
Re: 2011: Never Field Women As Candidates, Group Warns by Nobody: 9:02pm On Nov 10, 2010
The man that made that statement is only speaking for himself and not the entire Muslims.

Islam as a religion takes the female folks in very high esteem.

It is clearly stated in different parts of the Holy Quran.

Women are permitted to be FULLY EDUCATED and half rights similar to that of men.

Please people have an open mind to understand Islam better to know the religion and the Holy Quran is the best thing that has happened to Planet Earth.

Hypocrates and fanatics of the religion are not practising what the religion is all about.
