Being civil does not cost a dime.

Toh where will the parents even get the 17k now. Though she thought she was doing the parents but she lost her life instead, the guy will take his poverty to another family. If you can't afford a one time 17k how are you going to afford the marriage that is going to last forever. don't kill yourself for issues like this emotions can play on you and in the end you will feel you are the most stupid person on earth.

It is a big shame. Shows our upbringing defines us. If it was the West, it will be a non issue as most ladies marry either in their 20's or 30's.

In the core North, early marriage (this lady is most likely an illiterate) felt her life had come to an end at the age of 17, simply because her beau did not have the money for her dowry. Who even knows if the husband won't divorce her in 3 years time.
