If not for the recent outburst by the House of Representatives on the Abuja’s Close Circuit Television Cameras (CCTV) project, many Nigeria wouldn’t know that we have a $460 million debt, with no single benefit for citizens. There’s no doubt about this: the cameras, which were installed to help track criminals in the Federal Capital Territory, are now in ruins all over the city. That’s one of the legacies the former administration left for us. The project, which started in August 2010, was funded through a $600 million credit facility obtained from the Chinese EXIMBANK. It was to be completed in May 2011, but no, it hit the rock. Now, nine years later, we’re still very much in the debt.
