The Special Adviser to the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Ms. Ronke Azeez, has disclosed that the state government has recruited about 750 teachers that will help improve on the lapses in technical education.

Azeez spoke on Tuesday during a stakeholders' forum on Lagos/Eko Secondary Education Project for District One.

She said that the recently-recruited extra 750 volunteer teachers for the schools had entered an agreement with the state government for the improvement of technical education in the state.

While commending the district for involving members of the community in its education development, Azeez also disclosed that the Lagos Eko Project was the instrument the state government was using to ensure that the state's public school students were able to compete with their counterparts in the private sector.

She said the state government had made huge funds available to ensure that students in a the state public schools study in favourable environment with free textbooks and other educational materials.

According to her, "Governor Babatunde Fashola has mandated the resuscitation of uniformed clubs and societies like the Boys' Scout and the Girls' Guide to create positive social values. He mandated reading time in schools to ensure that children have extra time to read on their own."

Meanwhile, the Tutor-General and Permanent Secretary of Education District I, Mrs. Victoria Peregrino, said schools in the area had embraced the Eko Education Project because it was every teacher's job to see that the students succeed.

She said that right equipment/facility to enhance quality of teaching, where students could learn unaided was the joy of every teacher.

A parent, Elder Olusola Esan, attributed the quick success of the programme to the devotion of teachers and the state government.

The consultant, 'Yemi Adeyemi-Enilari, said that when they first started the programme, they were horrified by the number of students in the class.

Hrm. I've always wondered about textbooks in Nigeria. What is the current process like? Where are they sourced from? For example, take a high school calculus book. Is there a standard (or a few standard) books used in Nigeria? How expensive would such a book be (a rough estimate would be fine)?

I had wondered how these kind of clubs are fairing under our dilapidated system. This is what happens when you allow IBB and the like to ride roughshod over the entire system just because the leaders are sick. Our educational system died when NPN rigged elections (especially at the state level) in 1983 and got kicked out a few months later.
