A monarch in the Ogale community, Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State, Chief Harrison Odungwere, said on Tuesday that some residents of his area cook and bathe with bottled and sachet water following the contamination of the groundwater in the area.

Odungwere, who is the paramount ruler of the Mbunmeta community in Ogale, expressed sadness that residents of the area had continually consumed benzene contaminated water due to the absence of potable water in the community.

He, however, called on the Federal Government to provide potable water by industrialising its supply in the area, as private boreholes produced water laced with crude oil.

He said, “I have about 300 bags of sachet water, which we use for cooking and bathing, which will last my family a week. But those who can’t afford bottled or sachet water still drink, bathe and cook with the contaminated water.

“Our community is heavily impacted and polluted by hydrocarbons for the past 15 years or thereabouts.

“The Ogale people have been drinking highly polluted water and suffering until when the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project came up and started supplying potable water with tankers, which was a big relief that time until that programme failed.”

Odungwere added that though the Niger Delta Development Commission had dug one borehole in the area, where the residents access clean water, the supply was inadequate for the people.

“The NDDC has dug one borehole somewhere in our community for people go to fetch water, but it is not enough. We need an industrialised water supply system that will be connected to people’s homes in our community,” he stressed.

A Paramount ruler dat cannot dig borehole for his people.
How much does it cost for such a project?
But he keeps on collecting millions of naira from the oil coys as royalties every year.
No wonder he has d money to afford 300 bags of sachet water for his family.

What is the Local government and State government doing in all these?!

This is the same state that receive the highest monthly allocation from the Federal government for many many years now.

You either don't want to understand, or are programmed not to understand. Water is already contaminated. A borehole will still be the same contaminated water. Na wah for you sha.

NDDC is a big failure. It was simply a money making ATM for its managers which was gushing cash to their accounts. The Niger Delta ministry was not much different.

If these 2 bodies had spent the cash prudently and the state governments chipped in as well, these states would have been transformed.

There was an instance where a high up in the NDDC spent 800m on marabouts. He was not even the head of the commission!

Have you noticed the Niger Delta are no longer agitating for resource control? That's how bad the corruption is.

To have an idea how much transformation could have been achieved in those states, just take a look at Akwa Ibom under Akpabio. Even though contracts were greatly inflated, many were very impressed with his many projects. Just imagine what that state would have looked liked if those projects were carried out at their actual costs?

Apart from fantastical corruption, there's also the problem of greed. The contaminated underground water may be the results of militants or crude oil thieves who damage the oil pipelines to steal crude.

Poor Niger Deltans

Our thinking for many decades, even as teenager(s) : Niger Delta region should be one of the best if not the best region in the whole of Africa assuming our government have been doing things right, pre democracy and when our denocracy started in 1999.
The best schools, best hospitals, best ports, best everything should be in Niger Delta region for real,
while they spread it to other region all over the nation from there.
This is where over half of what we depend on as a nation comes from.
You protect and guide where you are making your money from.

But our leaders and Niger delta leaders have only been after their personal pockets.
There is one of their leader that disappeared since 2015 after collecting BILLIONS from the Jonathan just to secure the pipelines, another one used our money to go established a university in a neighboring country!
There is another one that was jailed in the UK few years ago!
A big shame.

May Ken Saro-Wiwa's soul continue to rest in perfect peace.
We pray he won't die in vain for his people.
