modernize the market by building shops(rows of flats) that would be too expensive for the former occupants, is that really development

So they should leave it to be as smelly and useless as it is?

There's this rotten air and dirty water that oozes out of that market constantly.

That place has been a sore eyesight for too long and if reconstruction is the way forward, so be it.

People that refuse to move ahead and develop themselves will always be left behind.

We can't keep delaying progress because of sentiment.

I don't understand this Country again, What does it take the traders to vacate the market after been told to do so, and why can't the engineers show mercy by giving them an hour to pack up. And yet we wonder why the number of poor people are on the increase.

We should forgo these crappy zink "markets", and build real modern markets...
With proper storage facilities, security, banking facilities, ambulatory services, etc.

PEOPLE'S HEALTH IS AT STAKE![
>

Oga, you call it a fruit market, try and visualize the type of airy structures that most of them need, even upon giving it a modern touch, except you are thinking of their usual method of dislodging 5,000 law abiding average traders to bring in 200 wealthy ones or just 2 South African companies in the name of modernization.

You allow people to grow into it. You want only the markets to look like Europe, while the pockets of the people are not and our leaders are not even thinking like European leaders. And our roads are not. We'll wait to see how much they will ask then to pay just like the Ogba Retail Market.

[s]Enemy of progress. You say 2.5billin is too much to construct a modern market on 25acrea of land, are you for real, face reality this is Lagos and not your village [[/s]/quote]

Mediocre,
You suddenly reduced it to N2.5b. I still try to visualize carving out 25 acres from that place after the massive terminal. You call it a fruit market, go and see how such markets look, even in Europe. Nigerian usual style is to dislodge 5,000 poor people to bring in 200 others.
Why is the government primarily interested in modernizing markets, where people already bitten by economic hardship, are hustling? We'll wait to see how much you ask them to pay after, just like Ogba Retail Market.

There are a lot of derelict health centres and schiols to modernize. But the market will involve the people to pay. By the way, we never read the request for tender for the market construction anywhere.

Am very happy about this...I went there talking to them about keeping their fruits and vegetables properly not on the dirty floor they said I was speaking Spanish..the whole market is terribly dirty...will miss buying fruits from there but our health is more important...
Lagos government this is the way to go. Thumbs up.

Do you just start consuming your fruits immediately you pick it up from the market? Then you must be a dirty person yourself.

Why should they get compensated when even they admitted being given notices but chose to ignore it...
The level of IMPUNITY in Nigeria is mind-boggling, from the top (a President who ignores court orders) to the bottom.

Issues of PUBLIC HEALTH and safety should not be compromised...
The health of the citizenry is not an area where we should be RACING TO THE BOTTOM.

The reality is that if you go to many markets in Lagos/Nigeria, you will not eat for a while...
Goods and produce are placed on the floor (even on the streets), while meat is often covered in flies.

Then, when folks drop dead at a relatively young age...
The largely superstitious citizens will blame “village people”!

People often look at the price of doing things rather the cost of not doing same...
But if we continue to neglect public health, EVERYONE ultimately pays the price (one way or another).

You act as if Nigeria is the only place where fruit markets exist...
Modern fruit markets litter the globe and even here in NIGERIA, Emmanuel Ijewere’s Fresh Farms have inexpensive modern fruit stalls.

Meanwhile, while my post had nothing to do with large grocery stores or chains, suffice it to note that even those SA companies (apparently some Nigerians are just as xenophobic, but just not yet as violently so) depend on LOCAL NIGERIAN farmers, suppliers, logistics, security, etc. Accordingly, apart from the HUNDREDS OF NIGERIANS that they directly employ, they also generate HUNDREDS of other NIGERIAN JOBS all along the value chain. Heck, if that’s the best way to ensure clean healthy produce, more power to them.

There’s only so much you can do to clean-up a pit latrine (in fact, you can’t)...
What this PPP seeks to do is akin to replacing a pit latrine with a sanitized flush system.

Sometimes, the only way to change habits is by structural change...
That’s a metaphor for Nigeria itself! But if it’s your idea of “oppression”, sign me up.

Fruit market where they sell fruits at a higher price.

Well the advantage is that the place MIGHT become cleaner.
Ketu actually needs fresh air.

As in the market is so muddy and dirty.

Are they not tired of dirt, mud and stinking smell in that market? angry

Government try in that direction.

Kudos jare!

OK, so where do you know in Lagos that is smellier than that Ketu - Mile 12 market corridor?

You're just lumping mile 12 with it. You earlier described Ketu fruit market as the dirtiest.

All ijoras (Badia, Olopa and the other one) are dirtier than both

For one, that Fruit market is situated just at the boundary between ketu and mile 12, so I refer to it has ketu/mile12 market. Secondly, I never referred to it as the "dirtiest" place, I said it was the "smelliest", two different things.

But it stinks. Let the truth be told.
That's why people like me, who would have loved to buy fruits in baskets from that market will Never go there.
Assuming it was neat, the market will experience more patronage that it has ever experienced.
Middle class, average class, even the rich will buy from there.

But as it is before it was demolished, it's only some class of people that goes there to buy or people who do not care about cleanliness.

Government try! Let them demolish and turn that place into a clean and structured market .
