Most commuters in the FCT were left bewildered and stranded today as the popular means of transportation the KEKE,(tricycle) was nowhere to be found. From Jabi to Apo to Gwarimpa, the story was the same. Students, artisans, businessmen, civil servants and traders had to trek long distances to school, offices or business premises after waiting endlessly for Keke to take them to their destinations. Taxi drivers were quick to cash in on the situation and charged the stranded commuters exorbitant fares for the routes normally covered by the KEKE’s. For instance commuters were forced to pay N100 for a ride from Galadima gate in Gwarimpa to 69 Road which usually costs N50 on Keke. Those who couldn’t afford the hike in the price had no option but to trek long distances some even carrying heavy loads.

Some few keke riders who operated discretely in some estates blamed the situation on the ban of kekes on the highways, saying the strike was in solidarity with their members who were affected by the ban. Social media is awash with numerous tales of woe from those who had a harrowing experience getting to destinations. Some were concerned about the ripple effect of the ban without alternatives. Saying it could lead to an increase in crime and kidnapping, others applauded the move saying that the Keke riders had become a nuisance causing traffic jams and accidents by their reckless driving.
Whatever the case, the Keke has filled a need for FCT residents of an affordable and available means of transportation. If an alternative is not found soon, many will suffer.
