Really??

Nigerian politicians are the dumbest i have ever seen in the world. When they make policies, you begin to imagine if they are humans or just higher specie of animals.

You tax the rich mercilessly? Not the rich politicians who are rogues but real rich investors. You are indirectly scaring huge investors away knowing they will be taxed without mercy. And the taxes end in the pockets of those roguish politicians?

When you tax big investments without mercy, you cripple them and leave them with little for expansion and reinvestment, thereby destroying economic growth.

The next, they all pack up and look for investment heaven where they will be taxed with mercy. This creates employment crises because as it stands, the rich creates employment in a capitalist economy.

You dont tax people mercilessly unless you are jealous of them being rich,

What idiots we have as politicians.

I think it's a good idea.the rich shud pay more tax.it works that way in Europe ,when you earn more ,u pay more tax.this discourages people from stealing and amassing wealth just look at Germany ,if you work too much and earn much, you have to pay much tax, nobody will tell you before you reduce your work.its not a bad idea ,the only bad thing is what to do with the tax and how to prevent stealing of such tax.If we want our country to be like Europe ,we need to pay tax like Europe .the tax makes the system work , everything is taxed.if we have billionaires ,senators etc, they shud pay huge tax to bridge gap between rich and poor

quote author=Conceptman post=84993429]Wahala wa de baayi o(problem don com start now) grin if you task the rich mercilessly, won't it affect the poor when the rich ones stop giving and sharing with the poor in the name of heavy Tax by government, odikwa next level indeed grin[/quote]

This guy is brainwashed by the socialist movement in America. Socialism has never worked and will never work, these are the reasons.

1) The human spirit requires huge incentives to have huge motivations and make huge innovations. If you make extreme hardwork less lucrative your country will stop moving forward.

2) There is a mass stupidity that depicts that rich people have cash stashed somewhere in the bank, this is false. The rich have most of their wealth in assets and not cash, to include things such as wealth tax is useless because you will have to liquidate their assets and it will hurt the economy in the long run because if they do not have much equity, they wouldn’t not be motivated to make innovations.

3) Socialism has never worked in history.

4) The more the rich is taxed, the more the poor suffer. The rich will reduce salaries to stay rich or employ less people. You can’t tell a man running a business how much he should make, can you?

The ideal thing to do is to create a middle class to pay the poor and serve the rich. This middle class should run Small and Medium Enterprises. You can only do this by creating a conducive environment for businesses to thrive. For crying out loud we import pencils and toothpicks, this is the job of the middle class.

This is thought-provoking and on point!

The justification for taxing people ''mercilessly'' is to stop them from working hard?

What kind of thinking is this?

Tax people mercilessly is a misstatement. Why don't you confiscate all of Dangote's Wealth, give to BUHARI and I will see how you will prevent him from dashing it to Almajiris and his people in Niger Republic.

Useless talk from a senseless idiot! Why are they poor? Are the rich responsible for anybody's misfortune? Some people sleep not more than 2/3 hours per day just to make life comfortable for them, while Afonja/IPOB war is going on on Nairaland. Who is too blame?
When it rains, some go to plant while some stay indoors to have sex, who is to blame?
Do the rich have more than one head, 2 hands and legs? Do they have more than 24hrs?
Rubbish talk from a senseless zombie!

Actually, to be harsh, Nigerians need to pay more taxes.

It would be a good thing if we paid 30-50% of our monthly earnings as tax, the better to force many of us to sit up and actually take an interest in what our gofment is doing...

(Yes, I mean it.).

The truth is, if we pay taxes at a higher rate...rich people inclusive...and government does nothing...people will get angry, and throw the corrupt people out and deal with them well well.

So higher taxes = fire under the feet of whoever is in government.

But then again, Nigeria is a country where people fight for their interests first, before tribe and everything else.... smiley

My thought process as well in those days until I realised sadly that no depth of suffering can seperate my fellow Nigerians from sentiments and prejudice. Tax all you want, collect every penny and sell them to slavery yet they abide in the crab pot.

Apt!

It's the reason why there are less F500 companies in Sweden or Norway compared to the US or Japan even on per capita basis.

However, I must say that overall, Nigerians pay low taxes than their counterparts in other parts of the world. I saw a tweet comparing tax rates across the world and to be honest, even as a free market proponent and an avowed supporter of low taxes for individuals, I was stunned by our personal income tax rate compared to other countries. Although, that of CIT is high, it's fairly OK compared to other nations. My issue with this statement is that these taxes aren't used judiciously and even if so, they are spent on inflated projects. Regarding the analogy that higher taxes = increased development and/or a more vocal civil society, I don't see that in Lagos or Akwa Ibom.

Lest I forget:

- Ogbeni Rauf is a low budget Karl Marx.
- NO rich person will pay any tax. Such an individual will simply contact some of the best accountants, lawyers, real estate agents etc and japa either investments or self to low taxed environments.

I agree that we pay lower tax than we should and I am of the opinion that everyone both the rich and poor should be taxed proportionally.

The reason I say this is because, there is tyranny in Nigeria politics against the masses and two kinds of people help this tyranny work.

1) The people who support it because it favour their religion or ethnicity.

2) The people who do nothing about it. This is where the majority lies and this can be proven by the statistics that show we are one of the poorest nations in the world yet the happiest.

I remember one politician said that not greater than 100, 000 people cared about Sowores detention and one influential person on tweeter said let us prove this politician wrong by getting 100,000 retweets. He never got up to that amount and I can assure you that more than 100,000 people saw that tweet.

If we tax people who think in terms of religion and ethnicity they will start considering maybe we need good leaders who can put their money to good use. If we tax people who do not care about who is in government and who is not, they will start caring about Nigerian Politics. You can't tell me that if the government takes 20% off your salary, you wouldn't care what they did with it. You can't take that much money off my salary and I would have bad road or still be in traffic or be affected by inflation due to excessive borrowing. I think Nigerians need to feel enough pain that exceeds their threshold so they can react.

I must also say that there might be this genetic or cultural factor that makes us to suffer and smile regardless of the condition. If that is the case, then we are irredeemable. I wonder how blacks were slaves for 400 years, especially those who were not born into it. If I have ever seen freedom with my own eyes, forcing me to be a slave will be a suicide mission. I would rather die that be in chains with no hope in sight.

I've never seen a poor person build factories with their own money. This is done by people with surplus money (e.g. investors) in hope of generating more wealth over time.
Overtax the wealthy, and all you'll do is encourage them to hide and move more of their wealth abroad.
The tax revenue will be badly spent - given government's precedent, and the people will only get inefficient state-run enterprises.

The challenge is Nigeria's budget is too small to do anything tangible. Using the US as an example, 13 states do not have state income tax but make that up with higher property, gas or sales tax. I would like the tax code to be revised and make it easier to capture the informal sector. On the flip side, an increase in say corporate tax may lead to higher prices of good and services.
