Please i`m a little bit confused, does Nigeria need two national houses of assembly, senate and house of reps., can`t we make do with one (senate preferably). A lot of state funds is being wasted needlessly on the national assembly.

Bi-camaral legislature exists solely for checks and balances, and its meant to prevent ill-considered legislatures from being passed on to law, One house run by the rule of the simple majority might not be a good thing.

Do we need the so called `checks and balances` in Nigeria to the detriment of infrastructures.

We don`t have to copy what we don`t need, that it is needed in U.S. after over 200 years of democracy does not mean that it is NEEDFUL in Nigeria. We are wasting what we don`t have on what we don`t need.

I have always said it that one of them, preferably the House of Reps, should be scrapped and I am not convinced of the usefulness or the contributions of the two of them at the same time. In fact, they are usually at each other's throat and by so doing cause avoidable delays as we witnessed during their joint sessions on constitution amendments, budget presentation by the President, etc. Moreso, the scrapping of one of the houses would do our lean finances a lot of good. The checks and balances that are expected in a democracy should be provided by the Executive and Judiciary as well as a vibrant press.
