The Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board (JAMB), is an entrance examination board that you must pass in order to secure admission into any higher institution in Nigeria. Thus, it is essential to know details about JAMB cut-off marks for various universities. JAMB also conducts a standardized exam known as the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).


This exam is computer-based, and the scores you get at the end of the exam would determine whether you are qualified to obtain admission into certain public or private universities, polytechnics, or colleges of education.

For obtaining admissions into the 2019/2020 academic session, JAMB has set 160 as the minimum cut-off mark for all public universities and 140 as the minimum cut-off mark for all private universities.

However, each of these universities have the rights to raise their cut-off marks above the one set by the JAMB.

Now let’s look at the list of the JAMB cut-off marks set by some of the top universities in Nigeria in no particular order.

JAMB Cut-off Marks for Universities in Nigeria

University of Ibadan - JAMB cut-off mark: 200

The University of Ibadan (UI), located in Ibadan, Oyo state, started off in 1948 as a College of the University of London. This university has since grown in status and reputation to earn the position of independent university in 1963. UI has a total of 13 academic faculties, including its internationally-recognized College of Medicine. The university has about 150,000 alumni in 160 countries across the world. Notable alumni of this prestigious university includes Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka, and renowned novelist Chinua Achebe.

Covenant University - JAMB cut-off mark: 180

Covenant University (CU) is a private Christian university situated in the Ogun State town of Ota in southwestern Nigeria. It was established in 2002 and has over 6,000 students enrolled in its 34 undergraduate and 31 postgraduate programs. Covenant University runs these academic programs through the collegiate system, consisting of four colleges for the undergraduate level and one for the postgraduate level. According to the NUC rankings, Covenant University is the best private university in Nigeria.


University of Ilorin - JAMB cut-off mark: 180

The University of Ilorin, a federal government-owned public university is situated in Kwara state, and was established in 1975. This university has over 60 academic departments across its 15 academic faculties that offers 90 academic programs. There are over 48,000 students enrolled at the undergraduate level and over 5,000 at the postgraduate level. There are over 3,600 students enrolled in this university’s School of Preliminary Studies.

University of Abuja - JAMB cut-off mark: 180

The University of Abuja (UNIABUJA) was established in 1988. The main campus of the university is located along the Airport Road in the Nigerian capital Abuja. UNIABUJA is a public university with over 10 academic faculties and two schools that encompasses over 60 departments. It offers around 50 programs in a diverse fields of study, including Agriculture, Arts, Education, Law and Health Sciences. It is the second most populated university in Nigeria, with over 63,000 students enrolled.

University of Lagos - JAMB cut-off mark: 200

University of Lagos (UNILAG), a federal government-owned research university, was founded in 1962 and started with only 131 students. However, this top Nigerian university currently offers higher education to over 40,000 students. It has three campuses located at Yaba and Surulere of Lagos State in southwestern Nigeria. The university consists of 12 academic faculties and 5 institutes. It offers 86 undergraduate and 140 postgraduate programs in various fields. One notable alumni of this university among others is the first African-born Pulitzer winner Dele Olojede.

Obafemi Awolowo University - JAMB cut-off mark: 200

Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), located in the ancient city of Ile-Ife in the Osun State, was established in the early 1960s. This university has 88 academic departments across its 13 faculties. The total number of students enrolled is around 30,000. Notable alumni of this top university includes Nigerian billionaire businessman Femi Otedola.

University of Nigeria (UNN) - JAMB cut-off mark: 180


The University of Nigeria, Nsukka, is located in the Enugu State. University of Nigeria was established as the first indigenous university in Nigeria. There are over 36,000 students enrolled in 102 academic departments across its 15 faculties. The public university offers 82 undergraduate and 211 postgraduate programs in various fields including Medicine, Engineering, Arts, Sciences, Agriculture, and Management Sciences. Some alumni of this university includes former Vice-President and Treasurer of World Bank, Arunma Oteh.
