"Those who have lived in the north speak of the Almajiri children. How they litter everywhere, around restaurants, fast food joints and food vendors waiting for leftovers. Almajiri, I'm told is supposed to be a form of Islamic education, but which like every other would be noble idea, has been bastardized. It's become an escape route for parents who don't want to take responsibility for their children. The United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) speaks of one million out of school children in Kano alone, and about 10 million in the region. This is an emergency situation that ideally should alarm the leaders and the elite of any society. But for the north's elite, there is not much appreciation of the danger yet. Minds are still configured to look for danger hundreds of kilometers away in the east, the pro Biafra agitators whose ultimate goal is to, 'prevent the flow of oil wealth.' This, for them, matters most.
