Ndubuisi Orji, Abuja

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has threatened to boycott the 2023 general elections if electoral reform are not carried out.

National Chairman, Uche Secondus, stated this yesterday, when he received a team from the International Republican Institute (IRI), who visited him at the PDP headquarters, in Abuja.

He said the decision to shun the polls was borne out of the experience of the opposition party in recent elections, which he say had not been pleasant.

He claimed the government, security agencies and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were working together to deny the people the right to choose their leaders.

Secondus noted that the country needed a new electoral law that would legalise electronic voting as well as insulate the military and other security agencies from the electoral process. He said anything short of that would not be unacceptable.

“One of the areas we are looking forward to in our country is our electoral processes and laws. We believe they are antiquated, they need amendment. We need to improve on our voting patterns and the reporting of results from voting point and the transmission processes.

“They are all embodied in the electoral processes and amendment; without that, it will be difficult for us to think about contesting any election because previous experiences have been terrible and horrifying. The people in government with INEC and security agencies collaborate to deny the people their right. As we speak, both the legislature and judiciary have been caged and they are taking directive from the villa.

“So, these are areas that we need the collaboration of IRI and other international agencies. If people do not have the right to vote, what is the essence of election? People must come out of their houses to register and vote. They must have the right to go out there to vote and then be safe.”

He said the party has resolved to set up a committee to review the conduct of the 2023 polls, adding that the report will, to a great extent, determine if it would participate in future polls in the country.

“If there is no need, we will inform the leaders of our party, show them the facts and figures, people who have ben killed, people who went to vote, if you can not be guaranteed that you can go and vote and come back safely, what will be the need in 2023 to come and vote?”

Speaking during the visit, the Resident Program Director, IRI, Angela Wambugu, said electoral reform was much needed in the country.

Without electoral reforms we will always have square pegs in round holes. Unfortunately APC government may never sign it seeing the loophole to stay in power.
With this kind of government, the only solution to peace is a breakup of the nation.

PDP had sixteen solid years to do all the electoral reforms but they didn't , now they are calling another party to do it for them.

Shame on them.

On a second note, what is holding General Buhari from signing the bill permitting electronic voting.

Towards the election, he gave the excuse that If he signs it, there won't be enough time to implement the law as the elections are close.

Now the elections have come and gone, and he wo his election, what is still holding him from signing that bill into law. It's obvious Buhari enjoys this Nation being in chaos. He has quickly signed the finance bill into law, even signed a bill into law in London.

PRESIDENT BUHARI SIGN THE BILL PERMITING ELECTRONIC VOTING INTO LAW ON YOUR DESK.

Electoral reform campaigners championed by PDP? Which party bastardized our electoral system? The elections PDP won prior to 2019, how did they win?
In the states PDP won in 2019, how did they win? Secondus should simply say that from the handwriting on the wall, that his party is unable to win the next election and that they are ready to withdraw from the election to avert the defeat that surely awaits them in 2023.

PDP stayed in power for 16 useless years which benefited nothing to Nigeria and Nigerians.

APC has only just started.

APC needs at least 32 years in power to correct all that PDP messed up and make this nation a true giant.

We are already on that path and do not need another failed leadership from PDP

We will be glad. It's the shortest route to turn Nigeria to a one party state. The current law was used by PDP to conduct elections for 16 years, it means the law is good. If PDP did not see that the law was faulty in their period, then APC can't see that now either.

Secondus is a tyro in national politics. His fledgling political career is a premise to his party’s current moribund situation. Imagine loosing 85% of contested elections (including reruns) to the opposition. PDP should continue encouraging wike to run the party like the brick house till the opposition party’s winning streak becomes impregnable.
