Southern Nigeria wants restructuring not presidency – Fani-Kayode fires back at El-Rufai

Femi Fani-Kayode, former Aviation Minister, on Monday said the Southern part of the country was more interested in restructuring than 2023 presidency.

Fani-Kayode made the remark in response to the Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai’s comment that the Southern part of the country should be allowed to produce Nigeria’s next president.

El-Rufai had suggested that the Southern part of the country should be allowed to produce President Muhammadu Buhari’s successor in 2023.

The governor, who is a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, had said that the North had no reason to hold onto power at the end of Buhari’s second tenure.

“But as a group, the Northern APC will have to sit down and endorse someone, most likely someone from the South, because after eight years of Buhari, I don’t think the Presidency should remain in the north unless there is some extenuating circumstances. But all things being equal, we will honour our agreement and we keep our words,” El-Rufai had said.

However, the former Minister insisted that the Southern part of the country was interested in their freedom.


In a tweet, he described Nigeria’s presidency as “accursed.”

To those that seek to appease us by saying that they may concede the Presidency to the south in 2023 I say this. The south is more interested in restructuring or outright independence than the Presidency. Give us our freedom and keep your accursed Presidency,

Though not a fan of FFK, I believe in the interest of all and for the sake of fairness power should return to the south but in all honesty restructuring is the way out in the long term. There's a need to renegotiate our coexistence as a nation by sitting down to discuss the conditions of the union if there will be any further justification for the union in the first place.

And the best way to get restructuring is for the south to reject the presidency in 2023, right?

Between a southern and northern president, who is more liable to restructure Nigeria? Even if all parts of Nigeria agree unanimously to restructure, is it not better for a southern president to preside over the process than a northern president? Let’s put on our thinking caps now.

No president will perform more than the Constitution. Nigerian Constitution is not enterprising.
The Constitution presently is skewed to favour a section of the country. No matter who becomes the president, they will be teleguided. It is time that Nigeria moved a way from zoning presidency. This can only be with a fair Constitution like the American system.
If North or any part of the country wants to be president forever they can keep like Bush and his son becoming presidents almost successively.
It is high time we restructured. Those who make peaceful change impossible make violent change inevitable.
