The pan-Yoruba cultural group, the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC), has said it will not allow sympathisers of Boko Haram, a religious sect in the North, to come to any part of the Southwest.

It said the group would resist any attempt to introduce the sect to the Southwest.

OPC founder Dr Frederick Fasehun, addressed reporters yesterday at Century Hotel, Okota, Lagos, saying the violence which accompanied the Boko-Haram upsurge last year led to many deaths and destruction of property in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, among other places in the North.

Fasehun spoke on the reported leadership crisis between Alhaji Haruna Muhammed, a caretaker chairman of the popular Mile 12 Market, Lagos, and Alhaji Ibrahim Mamuda, another trader.

The OPC leader said the leadership crisis between the duo on December 6 made Muhammed, now at large, to allegedly deploy some of the security agents in the market to use dangerous weapons on innocent people.

Fasehun said this led to the death of about 20 people and injuring of three others who were hospitalised.

The OPC leader said another attack resulted in the burning of the market’s union office.

Displaying the pictures of those injured in the attack, Fasheun said Muhammed allegedly used dangerous weapons like Boko Haram.

He said the rumour that Muhammed escaped to Maiduguri, the hot bed of Boko Haram, lent credence to the alleged link of the man with the sect.

Not enough Hausa in the East to form a Boko Haram either. However, this is welcomed news. OPC sure does know how to handle business. As long as they don't bother Eastern people who mean them no harm.

Do you see any Boko Haram in the East? Actually, Boko Haram-like activities have been in the west. They have struck there, and will strike again in future, more daringly.

Vice chancellor averts religious crisis at Ibadan university

By Jide Jegede

Print print Email email Share Share

But for a quick intervention of Olufemi Bamiro, the Vice Chancellor, University of Ibadan, the academic community would probably have been engulfed in religious violence from the end of last week.

A 400-level law student of the institution, Seun Bunmi Adegunsoye, was said to have almost provoked tension, as she intruded on a Jumat service going on at a mosque within the university community, shouting ‘accept Jesus’.

Ms Adegunsoye, a Christian evangelical and a student of the Law faculty, nearly disrupted the ongoing service led by the institution’s chief imam, Abdulrahman Oloyede, as she continued screaming, “Except you accept Christ in your life, you are not safe. All of you here, no matter the number of the congregation, accept Jesus Christ. Allah is not God; Jesus is Lord”.

According to an eyewitness, her conduct attracted the fury of some male Muslims, who waited around the premises of the mosque almost an hour after the service, to deal with her for the “unwarranted provocation”.

Mr Bamiro, however, saved the day. He came to the mosque immediately he was contacted, to apologise to the Muslim students, describing the incident as “very surprising and unfortunate”.

He also pledged a full investigation into the incident and promised to prevent future occurrences.

Though effectively curbed, the incident is already threatening the peace of the institution and that of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, since it occurred last Friday.

Its effect resonated at the institution’s Obafemi Awolowo hall of residence on Sunday, as Muslim students gathered in front of the hall in the morning to engage their Christian fellow students in a verbal war. The mounting tension arising from the encounter was only quelled by security operatives drafted to the scene.

Already, the matter is dominating discussions among notable Islamic leaders and Hausa community leaders in the city, who considered it strange, particularly as it came on the first Friday of the holy month of Ramadan.

Planning a protest

A source also informed us that Muslim students of the institution are planning to stage a protest to the office of the vice chancellor and that of the dean of the faculty of law.

We further learnt that they would be demanding a stoppage to the examinations of the law faculty, scheduled to start today, until Ms Adegunsoye is brought to justice.

Addressing journalists at the weekend, Zakariyah Giwa, President of the Muslim Students Society of Nigeria (MSSN), University of Ibadan branch, alleged that the incident was a ploy to “perpetuate religious crisis in Nigeria, starting from the campus of the University of Ibadan”, describing it as unfortunate.

He said Ms Adegunsoye’s action was a clear effrontery, alleging that, for the first time in history, she dressed like a Muslim to detract a jumat service in the month of Ramadan at the time the Chief Imam was leading the prayer.

“To our dismay and to the surprise of the whole Muslim community, we learnt that the girl has been released to her parents, the following day, by the university authority, without any reference to the Muslim community, due to the purported intervention of two senior officials of the university. The terrorist is let loose despite the heinous crime she had committed,” he said.

OPC alerts on possible Boko Haram plots in Lagos

Thursday, 30 December 2010 00:00 By Alex Olise News - National

THE leadership of the Odua People Congress (OPC) has raised an alarm over plot by some persons to invite the banned Boko Haram Islamic sect to cause confusion and terrorise residents of Lagos State.

Addressing the media yesterday in Lagos, Founder and President, Odua Peoples Congress, Dr. Frederick Fasehun, said the organisation would resist any Boko Haram attack in the South-West.

Meanwhile, the police in Borno yesterday said Boko Haram members shot and injured three persons, including a retired senior police officer and two civilians in Maiduguri on Tuesday.

According to Fasehun, the OPC and Civil Society Club of Nigeria (CISCON) have been following certain developments since the emergence of the Boko Haram sect in the northern part of the country, especially in Borno State.

Explaining the fresh Boko Haram scare in Lagos, the OPC leader said: “There is a market leadership tussle between two northerners: one Alhaji Haruna Muhammed, the current caretaker chairman of the Mile12 Market union and another Alhaji Ibrahim Mamuda.

“On December 6, 2010 it was alleged that Alhaji Mohammed led thugs with dangerous weapons to attack Alhaji Ibrahim Mamuda at about 12 p.m. with the intention of killing him over the market union disagreement.

“During the attack, many people were injured and most of the victims were taken to a hospital but were later relocated when the leadership of the OPC got information that the thugs were planning to attack the hospital with a mission to kill their victims.

“Aside the attack, a second attack took place later that night which led to the burning of the old office of the market union, thereby raising more tension within the Mile 12 environs.”

Fasehun added: “Investigations show that Alhaji Haruna might be planning to invite Boko Haram members to Lagos over the market issue since he fled to Maiduguri, Borno State, which is the main operating area of Boko Haram.”

He said: “The Odua People’s Congress and the Civil Society group hereby call on Alhaji Haruna Mohammed to surrender to the police for interrogation. The organisation will prevail on the run-away suspect not to introduce the activities of Boko Haram or any violent activities into Lagos State and the South-West region at large.”

According to the mindset of the people at the OPC headquaters, Boko Haram trustees needs to write a formal letter to OPC for acceptance.

BTW I am not so sure OPC is doing the right thing. It is silly to draw attention to themselves. This is more like a challenge. If this people are affiliated to Al-Qaeda, OPC cannot confront them. Al-Qaeda have bomb making expertise that catch western countries unawares and we have a bunch of dane-gun-wielding talisman-dependent "army" challenging them.
Re: Opc ‘won’t Allow Boko Haram In Southwest’ by ekubear1: 3:15pm On Dec 31, 2010
Naw, OPC is taking exactly the right approach, imo.

Terrorism cannot be effective in the SW unless the terrorists win the hearts and minds of some fraction of Muslim Yoruba.

OPC has declared a priori that radical religious movements like Boko Haram are forbidden in Yorubaland (and presumably especially amongst Muslim Yoruba). If they actively resist such radicalization by "strongly discouraging" any such radical preachers, then you prevent radicalization and reduce the likelihood of terrorism. And you can use your own imagination to guess what "strongly discouraging" might entail tongue

Long story short, Al Queda/Boko Haram/etc have zero chance against OPC in Yorubaland even with whatever expertise they have unless they can get a toehold. And OPC is going to work very hard to ensure that this doesn't happen.

I applaud their foresight and vigilance.

Don't be naive, if the OPC forbids muslims from associating with who they want, they will only breed resentment which will drive them underground. This will make them harder to monitor as they plan. When they are ready they will erupt in a violent way.

OPC, must be ready to dialogue with the Yoruba Muslims otherwise they have already lost the war. Why? any covert invader that already has the sympathies and/or active support of almost half your population has already won.

Reminds me of my Orgo days in college!

You have to be careful when praising OPC

OPC and Boko Haram are both the same. Jungle justice in whatever form has no place in our democracy.

Let OPC members go find jobs to do. We really do not need them to stop Boko Haram.
Gani Adams is not the type of person you want to entrust with your security.
He is worse than the worst Boko Haramist!

Dr Fasheun is doing the right thing. Good organization from OPC, i pray they keep it up. What is GEJ doing? He was smilling in his car as he rode by in P.H.C, he looked like a president so detached from his people, no body coming out to wave, caused about 2 hours hold-up, sirens blazing and angry military escorts. Then why dont we just invite the military then, wheres the difference and we are here arguing about debate this, debate that. What does GEJ have to debate? he is far from nigeria, he is far from you.
