NDLEA arrests 59-year-old HIV-positive widow in PH

A 59-year-old HIV-positive widow, Mrs. Fati Akande, has excreted 99 wraps of a substance believed to be heroin at the Port Harcourt International Airport, after she was arrested by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

The substance, which weighed 1.408 kilogrammes, has a street value of N15 million. Akande, a mother of three from Oyo State, was paraded before reporters in Port Harcourt yesterday.

She said her HIV status made her to embrace drug trafficking in order to get money to manage the health challenge.

A Nigerian based in Netherlands, Mr. Samson Popoola, was named by Akande as her sponsor, stressing that her status was confirmed through a test conducted at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba.

NDLEA Commander, Port Harcourt International Airport, Mr. Julius Parah, disclosed that Akande was arrested at the airport during the outward clearance of Air France flight AF 3051 to Paris.

He noted that the suspect had Nigerian international passport with number A01392379 and was arrested on December 27, 2010 on her way to the United States of America (USA).
