This week, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Monday published Nigeria’s public debt stock figure for Q4’2019 which shows that the country’s total debt as at 31 December 2019 stood at ₦27.4 trillion (or $84.05bn), comprising of ₦9.02 trillion (or $27.67bn) external debt and ₦18.38 trillion (or $56.05bn) domestic debt.

This in real terms represents a 4.5% increase in the country’s debt stock between Q3’2019 and Q4’2019.

Interestingly, this data was released barely hours before the federal government through the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs. Zainab Ahmed, at a press briefing in Abuja announced that the government has applied for new foreign loans worth $6.9 billion (₦2.49trn using CBN official exchange rate of ₦361/$1) from IMF $3.4bn, World Bank $2.5bn, and African Development Bank (AfDB) $1bn to mitigate the ravaging impact of COVID-19 on the Nigerian economy.

While the new loan application has become an issue of necessity due to the fragile state of Nigeria’s economy resulting mainly from COVID-19 induced strain on humans and businesses, our concern is that the new loan will worsen Nigeria’s debt-related indicators which have been a major subject of concerns for many years.

Specifically, with the taking of the new loan, Nigeria’s total debt stock will rise by a minimum of 9.1% to ₦28.89 trillion, while the “Base Case” output of our model for Nigeria debt indicators (with minimal adjustment to 2019 Real GDP and Revenue estimate) shows that Debt-to-GDP ratio, Debt-to-Revenue ratio, and Debt per Capita size will worsen to 0.42:1 (or 42%), 7.87:1 (or 787%), and ₦14.5mn respectively in 2020 from 0.38:1 (or 38%), 5.48:1(548%), and ₦13.7mn in 2019.

The problem of Nigeria does not seem to be the fragile economy but an inept , good for nothing , incompetent administration. it seems Nigeria is now out of gear ,one of them even suggested printing more Naira notes to bailout the economy. with the way things are going , even if a lender gives Nigeria $100b it will still not be enough to get the country out of the woods

It is

Because quite simply, we are not earning enough from oil. Oil accounts for most of our earnings, and the price is too low for us to make much.

The fact is, our budget is just about $26 billion dollars. Our reserve is about $33 billion now. All for a population of 200 million people.

Comapre with the UK which spends $100billion for health alone
.

Add the fact that corruption and looting would chop most of our money.

The truth is, we are not a rich nation. Both parties in Nigeria are not interested in changing Nigeria because Nigerians themselves want the money to be shared. We won't spend what little we have on developing our productive capacity. Instead, we use the money for sharing.

That's why we can never develop, and why we will be taking loans. We are not earning enough money. And until we change our mindset to that of a producing industrial nation, we shall be where we are forever.

Borrowing to steal is a crime against Nigeria posterity. Borrowing to steal the borrowed fund is a sin that will not be forgiven.

Nigeria is facing COVID-19 and funds meant to alleviate the frustration of the Nigerian people are lost to fire in their billions and shared to anonymous fellows in billions.

Nigeria is facing COVID -19 lockdown and some part of the country are categorized as more venerable than others and some individuals categorized as more in need than others.

These are sins that will not go unpunished. These sins will not go unpunished as they borrow more to steal more and leave the present Nigerians in pains and the future Nigerians in depth.

My problem is not the loan but how well it will be utilized. Those in the North are waiting to devour the loan as soon as it arrives.

Soon, very soon, with the level of borrowing by our government, a time will come when this country will we ruled by the Chinese and others we're owing.

By then, they will take over the production of everything including our crude oil, just to recover their debt.

We're heading to a complete mess

Buhari's govt keeps getting us into debt with no positive outcomes on the ones taken in the past.

So far, Nigerians are yet to receive any tangible palliatives. Even the two months of free electricity that I thought they had agreed to give to Nigerians, the FG yesterday night said it was still looking at it. Meanwhile, donations are pouring in from everywhere yet nothing to show for them.

It is really unfortunate that a govt that rode into power shouting Change and Next Level doesn't have anything to offer to Nigerians rather it has taken Nigerians deeper into debt, poverty, insecurity, smallness and retrogression.

Nigerians....don't give up. This govt shall soon pass but we need to wise up regarding our choice of leaders going forward. We also need to take our destinies in our hands by becoming financially literate and building relevant skills that will make us financially independent in this 21st century.

Buhari and his party like others before them na wash.

These foreign lenders should be petitioned.

They shouldn't give us this loan.
We won't pay back.
We can't sell the future.
