Early Saturday morning, we reported that Mallam Abba Kyari, the Chief of Staff to Nigerian President Buhari, has passed away from complications of COVID-19.

Since then, as expected, many of you have flooded the internet with questions about Mallam Abba Kyari.

Yes, unfortunately, Abba Kyari has died from COVID-19 complications as we reported yesterday. Aljazeera also reported the death of Mr. Abba Kyari yesterday morning. According to Sahara Reporters, Abba Kyari died in a private hospital in Lagos called First Cardiology Consultants.

The influential technocrat was reportedly flown into Lagos from his Abuja base to receive more specialized treatment at the treatment.

According to The Cable, presidential spokesperson, Garba Shehu was on ground to pay respects to the late politician.
In a statement after Kyari’s burial, Shehu had this to say, ”The remains of the late Chief of Staff to the President, Mallam Abba Kyari, arrived in Abuja Saturday morning from Lagos, and have been buried at Gudu cemetery after funeral prayers at his residence,” he said.

”As advised by the protocols put in place by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and the Federal Ministry of Health on social distancing, the burial marks the end of all ceremonies and there will be no condolence visits to family and the Presidency.

”Well-wishers and all other Nigerians are instead advised to pray for the repose of the soul of the late Chief of Staff.

”A condolence register will be opened at the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) from Sunday for those who are able to use the window permitted for movement by the FCT administration.”

Abba Kyari graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology in 1980 from the prestigious University of Warwick. Thereafter, he proceeded to obtain a Degree in Law fro, Cambridge. He was called to bar in 1983. He then returned to his alma-mater in 1984 to obtain a Master’s Degree in Law.

He spent the years between 1988 and 1990 as an Editor with the publishers of Democrat Newspapers (New Africa Holdings Limited) in Kaduna.

Thereafter, he served as the Commissioner for Forestry and Animal Resources in the then Born State Executive Council in 1990. He then left to become African International Bank Limited’s Secretary to the Board between 1990 and 1995.

Mallam Abba Kyari went back to do some more studying at the International Institute Management Development in Switzerland in 1992. He also was part of the Program for Management Development at Harvard Business school in 1994.

Mallam Kari will later serve as Executive Director of Management Services in UBA and later become a Managing Director and consequently a Chief Executive of the bank.

He was later to be appointed a Director of Unilever Nigeria Plc. in 2002.

Abba Kyari served as an Honorary Member of President Obasanjo’s Presidential Advisory Council in Nigeria between the years 200 and 20015. He was awarded the Officer of the Order of the Niger (O.O.N) for his contribution to nation-building.
