5 Reasons Why The Lockdown In Nigeria Will Last Longer by Nobody: 4:11am On Apr 19, 2020
On March 30, 2020 President Buhari declared that there would be a 14 day lockdown in Lagos, Abuja and Ogun state to combat the spread of the coronavirus. This measure was exclusive to these 3 states because of their status as the hardest hit by the pandemic.

Notwithstanding, other state governors took a cue and announced lockdown in their various states as a precautionary measure.

By April 13, the number of confirmed coronavirus cases had hit 323. On the same day the President extended the lockdown by a further period of 2 weeks.

This writeup seeks to provide compelling reasons why we may be yet to see an end to this lockdown.

1. Rate of testing is yet to be sufficient

The rate of testing for Coronavirus in the country is yet to be sufficient. The Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has routinely given updates concerning progressively increasing capacity of the labs in Nigeria with regards to the number of tests done per day.

This increase in testing capacity is reflected by the increasing number of confirmed cases recorded per day. As the testing capacity of these labs continue to increase and more suspected cases continue to get tested, the gravity of the situation is becoming apparent leading the government to recognise the need to maintain status quo until the number of confirmed cases per day becomes "negligible".

2. Many citizens still believe that the pandemic is a hoax

The number of citizens who believe that the pandemic is a hoax is surprisingly massive. I explained some possible reasons why on this article.

The most popular reason for this belief is the notion that our politicians have devised the pandemic as an innovative avenue to further loot our common wealth.

These set of people refuse to agree that designated isolation centres are treating coronavirus. They insist that the coronavirus victims are just having malaria.

These doubters further prove their point by refusing to take recommended precautions thereby putting themselves and people around them at risk.

Having such individuals in any society is a prequel to disaster as may be bound to happen. These set of people may even be spreading the disease while denying its existence and taking treatment for other ailments.

If this is or has been happening, then there may be an explosion in number of confirmed cases leading to a much prolonged lockdown.

3. Religious dogma and fundamentalism

Many religious leaders and their followers have shown worrying reluctance to stay away from religious activities involving crowds.

This was a prominent issue at the beginning of the lockdown period and continues to be especially in the northern part of the country.

Several factors such as number of confirmed cases per day plays a huge role in influencing the decision of the powers that be on the right action to take with regards to the lockdown.

Gatherings with close proximity have been proven to be a quick means of spreading coronavirus. If religious gatherings continues to happen, then the number of confirmed cases will continue to soar leading to continued extension of the lockdown.

4. High poverty rate

As explained in one of my previous articles, those affected most by the pandemic are elites and the ruling class because of their high socio economic status and ability to regularly finance travel abroad at will exposing themselves to the pandemic, or mingling with their ilks who are abroad returnees and had been exposed.

Sometimes, there is occasional contact between these bourgeois and the proletariat. This contact could occur in a political rally or one of the numerous empowerment programmes our politicians like to carry out in the name of alleviating poverty.

These proletariat are people who feed from hand to mouth. They depend on wages and would go hungry any day they fail to work. Such people will hardly comply to any lockdown order.

Palliatives were provided by the government to these group of people but the distribution and spread was questionable. For this reason, most of these people are still on the streets looking to make money to cater for the days feeding.

If any had been infected, then the spread will be unprecedented because this group form the largest population of the country.

As expected, unprecedented spread will equal a further lockdown of unprecedented length.

5. Lackadaisical enforcement of the lockdown

Simple observation shows that the lockdown is enforced mainly in capital cities and not suburbs or other local government areas.

Also, security operatives stationed at checkpoints with a mandate to enforce the lockdown have been consistently accused of letting people move freely as long as money exchanges hand. For these officers and men it is business as usual. Others have been accused of using disproportionate force which is not acceptable.

Some governors have also expressed reluctance or unwillingness to either declare or enforce lockdown in their respective states.

A lackadaisical enforcement of any lockdown is as good as no lockdown at all. As the pandemic continues to spread due to such attitude, the lockdown will continue to be extend until adequate measures are enforced.

On the contrary, the Fg is already feeling the economic impact of the lockdown in Lagos and Abuja.

It will be relaxed after this 14days to allow some economy activities to continue. Already Sanwo olu met with top guys in the private sector to discuss a recovery plan.

Even Trump with the very high rate of the virus in the US has already conceived a plan for economy recovery which is in place already.

We have clueless leaders in power.

I suggested curfew right from the onset .. People can go to work in the morning while the curfew start from 7-8pm to 5am, then govt can fumigate every corner.

But what did we get , lockdown when average Nigerians depend on daily hustle to make ends meet.

Y'all need to see the way people queued with no social distance at all just to receive relief packages.

Now tell me if one person is carrying the virus in a crowded area where there's no social distancing what do you think would happen?
I still think using bvn is a safe bet. Sorry for being off topic.

Brace up yourselves! There's no way the lockdown will not be extended, except we want to live in self-deception

This is a great point sir. There will be a time when the leaders will have no other option.

Many Nigerians don't even have an account talk more of bvn. This set are affected the most.

Anyone who believes Buhari will not have another pre-recorded broadcast to announce an extension of the lockdown is living in a fool's paradise. Its inevitable. Even the US will only ease the lockdown starting May in a few States.

Even right now, locking Lagos, Abuja is tantamount to locking the goods supply chain and purse of the other 35 States.
