A staff of the Port Harcourt Electricity Distributing Company (PHED) Mr. Sylvanus James has been allegedly beaten into a state of coma by youth at Udotang Street, Off Nkemba in Uyo metropolis, Akwa Ibom State. James was said to be on his routine duty on the street when the youth numbering over 30 attacked and subjected him to beating to a near state of death using any available weapon. James, who was in severe pains on the hospital bed with a bandaged leg arising from a deep cut, could not ascertain why he was subjected to such inhuman act by the youth as at when filling this report. The wounded James, it was reported set out for duty early in the morning, checking out on those pre-paid customers who have vended or not made any electricity payment for almost one year in the street before he was physically assaulted with dangerous weapons by youth culminating in the loss of his two mobile phones including other valuables.

Reacting to the attack, the PHED Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Henry Ajagbawa, condemned the incident and identified the victim as Sylvanus James. In a statement, the company’s Manager, Corporate Communications, Mr. John Onyi, said, “James can hardly speak from his hospital bed with a bandaged leg arising from a deep cut, could not ascertain why he was subjected to such inhuman act by the youths who are still unknown.

The MD/CEO,Ajagbawa, explained that the victim was on a legitimate assignment, adding that a petition on the attack had been sent to the office of the Commissioner of Police, Akwa Ibom State Command.

“The performance of our employees and cooperation with customers are central to the success of service delivery; we will, as a matter of fact, not welcome any act of molestation, harassment, intimidation and physical assault on any staff,” the PHED boss said.

The FG has capped all bills to a certain limit. So no need for that. The highest bill in Akwa Ibom is about N3,300. How can you attack someone who is just hussling for his daily bread. This guys have family

Some prepaid customers have done bypass, some weeks ago PHED staff on routine check caught somebody in the area who had not recharged his prepaid meter for more than a year. The accused could not say anything meaningful to defend the revelation and if you check well he goes to church on Sunday.
