My flat mate is in this situation already. The worst is that his study permit will expire in June. Nigeria embassy in Barlin is shotdown since this Corona crisis started. Although German foreign office want to issue him two months temporary permit. We don't know what will happen after the two months.

My friend spent a lot of money to secure a nearby country's visa, booked air ticket, paid for accommodation and still couldn't go because of Covid-19. She lost everything.

Her Indian friends have advised her to do it online as other countries now do but will Nigerian government permit it? Nobody is ruling out the processing fees. You have her data already in your system. Why all these unnecessary protocol and humiliations? The girl in question is at the verge of suicide. Other people including students are in this situation right now. How do you think they will feel about their country?

There is no big deal in this. Nigerians data are already in the immigration database. All you need to do is to call it up, update the date and print. No complex process or digitization is involved here.

I understand what you say. To get us to that point you proposed we need an improvement in the process. Immigration is not by itself, it ties in with other disparate records on security and sovereingty. With one infrastructure you can solve the immigration improvements, customs, census, national ID, Vehicle registry, and a host of others. The same system will address all the different workflow for those other agents and each dept will have its designated portal. At the end of the deployment for that improvement we would have ended up with a central records database.

Immigration alone is not going to embark on such project due to cost. To find a way to fund it they will end up laying people off. It is poor people in the uniform that will suffer, not those with elite privileges.

But if all the agencies that benefit from the improvement share in the project, the cost distribution is light and affordable. Like I said, one system will take care of about ten or more federal agencies.

On the issue of renewing passports during lockdown. It is related with Federal guidelines. What is the guideline from Ministry of Interior and the Directorate of Immigration?

If for instance Immigration officers in Nigeria have direction to stop work and observe lockdown, That will apply as well to Immigration attaches in embassies abroad.

If I were in the same situation with about to expire passport, I think I would make inquiry with my school and the conssulate of the country and get clarity on what is applicable with Covid situation.
