THE Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is exploring all possibilities to ensure that avoidable lapses in the conduct of previous elections in Nigeria do not rear their ugly heads to mar the conduct of free, fair and credible general election in April this year.

To this end, the commission has concluded arrangements with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to deploy its vehicles installed with automated vehicle-tracking devices to accompany INEC’s team on distribution of electoral materials to various parts of the country.

FRSC Corps Marshal and Chief Executive, Mr Osita Chidoka, speaking when he received the INEC Chairman, Professor Attahiru Jega, in his office, on Thursday, said the vehicle-tracking devices would assist INEC in monitoring the distribution of electoral materials to the point of destination.

This, according to him, was to forestall cases of diversion of electoral materials and other unwholesome practices.

Chidoka said: “One of the things I have mentioned to the INEC chairman is that when you are ready to move the electoral materials, you can have our vehicles accompany them, so that you can say any point in time where your materials are. Because from our office they can tell you where they stop and if there is any diversion, we should be able to tell you unless they destroy our car.”

Meanwhile, the commission in Osun State, on Thursday, embarked on awareness campaign on the forthcoming voter registration.
The awareness campaign team was led by the state Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dr Rufus Akeju. They passed through major streets in Osogbo, the state capital.

The show according to the INEC REC, was aimed at creating awareness of all members of the public on the forthcoming voter registration and ensured that the exercise was hitch-free.
