CBN alerts banks on terrorist attack
Collins Nweze and Nduka
Chiejina, Lagos
ALL banks in the country have been
thrown into very high security alert
following the advise of the National
Security Adviser that banks have been targeted by
terrorist.
A private and confidential letter to all bank chief
executives in the country by the Central Bank of
Nigeria (CBN) warned all bank chiefs that the apex
bank has "received security alert from the office of
the National Security Adviser (NSA) indicating the
possibility of planned attacks on banks operating in
some parts of the country.
The letter identified the terrorists as "a group that
has been involved in recent spate of bombings and
violent confrontations with security agencies".
The letter to the bank CEOs dated January 12, 2011
and signed by one Ahmad Abdullahi on behalf of
the Director, banking supervision of the CBN, said,
"according to security alert, the threat profile is an
indication that the group is in dire need of funds for
a major operation".
The NSA through the CBN then warned that there
is "the possibility that banks’ buildings and bullion
vans used for cash movement particularly in the
Northeast or Abuja could be targeted through the
use of Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) and
suicide bombings".
The NSA and the CBN noted that they learnt that
"the planned offensive is to enable the group
acquire funds for the operations as well as
embarrass the Federal Government".
Based on these threats, the NSA urged all banks
"to take note, be vigilant and put in place adequate
security measures to neutralise such threats or
forestall any attack". In addition "all suspicious
persons, movements and unidentified or concealed
parcels or bags are to be reported to the relevant
security agencies for appropriate action".

Xomba:

Relax they cant try that.

Wrong !  Dynamite and Semtex are already in occasional use by Nigerian armed robbery gangs to bust  bank ATM machines and cash vaults asunder.  That new chapter in bank robbery technique was opened over two years ago in many parts of Nigeria, and those same devices could easily be deployed for the primary objective of inflicting mass casualties, as was recently done in Abuja and Jos.

I pity Nigerian bank workers now more than ever before, particularly if those roving demolition experts start to forge alliances of mutual convenience with fundamentalist terrorist types typified by losing election candidate Ayatollah Sharia-for-all Buhari.

With Johnny B. Goodluck, a bonefide Niger Delta homeboy poised to coast that home stretch to the resounding electoral victory that will usher in his triumphal return for a second term as Nigera's president, NONE of the former Niger Delta militants, who for long fought tooth and nail to oppose subjugation under northern Nigerian Islamic fundamentalist rule, will raise a finger to destabilize Nigeria in ANY way. No sir, those boys are in a celebratory mood right now, with their battle hardware safely stored away and gathering dust.

The terror groups now posing the greatest peril to Nigeria's pre-election peace and stability are those aligned with the old guard of Taliban-inspired, kleptomaniac fundamentalist usurpers of federal power, most of whom hail from the dusty and barren northern desert wastes of the country - a region that has never produced, and will never produce, so much as a drop of crude oil.

So they're now broke, and breaking the vaults is now their priority. What happend to funds from al-qaeda and the lots. Frozen?

And now that police are set to be withdrawn from banks. They will have to make do with hallogen and kings guards security now. Bad timming.
