Most persons who want to go into poultry farming scare out.. Also some do start and after being bashed as a result of inadequate knowledge, say Poultry Farming is not profitable.. Ever wondered why some in business still remain and are doing well??
This is because Poultry Farming is an industry and should be seen as one.. For one to be a successful student, one must read books to be able to pass exams. You have to develope your LEARNING SKILLS.
You cant succeed in anything in life if you don't constantly learn to upgrade your skills.. So develop a learning habit first.. Read online, take trainings, attend seminars and embrace any other form you can learn.. Don't just rush in.
CAPITAL
Get your Capital ready, poultry industry requires alot of capital to sustain the birds especially when it comes to purchasing feeds.. 70% of the total cost of productions goes to feed consumption.. So, get ready so you don't starve your babies. Don't be a part of those who minimize feed to maximize profit.. It would end in tears.. Because, in the poultry industry you get back what you put in.. There is no ojoro there. Don't fall for any deceit.
SENSITIVE
As a Poultry Farmer, you have to be sensitive to your birds.. Always communicate with them.. Know what they need.. I always advise, when you get into your pen each morning.. Walk round and do a survey.. Check your birds droppings. This is because, most diseases first show its symptoms through the type of droppings your birds excrete.. Such as dark greenish diarrhoea, brownish diarrhoea, blood in stool etc
HYGIENE/BIO-SECURITY
Poultry birds don't do well in a dirty environment.. I say to farmers "If you cant eat and stay where your birds are kept for an hour" then, you practising unhygienic farming. If you don't expose your birds to an hygienic environment, they easily contract diseases which would harm their immune thereby hindering their growth and also could result to death.. Take hygiene very seriously.
DISCIPLINE
As a poultry farmer, you have to be disciplined. That means you have to do the right things at the right time even when you don't feel like doing it. Don't procrastinate. This has lead to so many farms shutting down due to several losses incured.
Get those feeds and feed your birds at due time. Sweep that pen daily. Clear those bushes around. Take your daily records. Get that foot dip and ensure its used and changed daily. Give medications at due time. Use adequate Feeders and drinkers..
It keeps counting...
