In a court martial the accused also has a lawyer or defence counsel. He or she was the one pleading for his client for a lighter sentence after he was found guilty. Like putting forward mitigating circumstances for the panel of military judges to consider. Like meritorious service, contrite, having already returned the loot. etc.

After hearing from both the prosecution and defense counsels, the panel now agreed on what the felt was a fair penalty for the crime.

As a school boy I used to go to the High Court and join the audience to listen to court cases. Civil law courts. Court martial hearings have similarities too.
