Did Jesus Christ lay down any commandments regarding the naming of a child? NO.

Did God command a ceremony as far as giving your child a name? NO

Did Jesus Christ give anyone authority over you here on earth, even as far as the naming of your child? The answer is again NO

So @ OP, ask the parents why they chose to give authority to the man who added a name to their list. grin

In Bible parent gave names but in this world where people kidnap children to groom, name/naming appears to be of secondary importance
