A former Senate Leader, who is the Chairman, Senate Committee on Army in the 9th National Assembly, Senator Ali Ndume, declared on Sunday that federal lawmakers and other highly placed public officers were earning luxury wages to the detriment of Nigerian masses.

He said Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and a former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Muhammadu Sanusi, had vindicated his position on the high cost of running a presidential democracy, which he insisted was no longer realistic.

Ndume stated this while reacting to the views expressed by Osinbajo and Sanusi during a webinar organised by the Emmanuel Chapel, themed, ‘Economic stability beyond COVID-19’, on Friday.

Sanusi had on the occasion, pointed out that the governance structure in the country had set it up for bankruptcy, and asked the Vice President what the current regime would do differently to address the perennial problem.

In his response, Osinbajo had said, “There is no question that we are dealing with large and expensive government, but as you know, given the current constitutional structure, those who would have to vote to reduce (the size of) government, especially to become part-time legislators, are the very legislators themselves.”

Ndume said, “We have a budget of N10tn and only 30 per cent is going to the majority, whereas 70 per cent will be spent on a few minority. The system we are practising now is not fair either morally or socially.

“In the current system, workers are not being paid living wages, whereas a privileged few are earning luxury wages. The National Assembly members, including me, for instance, are paid luxury wages.

“How can we live comfortably when only a few of us are living a life of luxury while the majority are living in abject poverty? The N30,000 minimum wage is too small; it can make workers engage in corruption in order to survive.”

The senator, who represents Borno South Senatorial District, insisted that the current cost of governance was too much.

Ndume said the change from presidential democracy to parliamentary might be difficult for the current National Assembly to undertake because the present system was also in their favour.

Ndume said, “Parliamentary system is effective in the sense that the head of government is more or less one among equals of the parliamentarians.

“Therefore, accountability is achieved in the chamber in the sense that the prime minister has to be in the parliament every day, and he must give account of government to his colleagues.

“Also, ministers are selected among the elected parliamentarians. The idea is to reduce the cost of governance and make it more effective.”

On how to effect a change in the current system of government, Ndume suggested that legal luminaries should come together and fashion out an acceptable arrangement that could lead to a constitution amendment through referendum.

...When he was a Senate leader at the 8th assembly, he never clamoured or support the motion for the reduction of the "luxury wages" then, the sugar was so sweet in his mouth and he finds it difficult to spit it out.

When they're being addressed as "Former" that's when they start behaving as if they very close to the masses, but when they're addressed as "Current" they're officially blind to anything that would stop them from having a slice of the cake.

It has been like that frm ages, they are only representing their selfish interest alone. That's why politicians will rather go through any means they know to be appointed or hijack the post. When ordinary local government chairmen they live flamboyant lifestyle.

The day senators go on strike is the day I will believe Nigeria is changing. Some idiots here blamed Drs for going on strike. They did not blame the system that withheld their pay for two months without justification. They did not blame the system that slashed health and education by about 50% yet slashed NA by just 9%. They did not blame the system that pays a senator or minister newspaper allowance that dwarfs the yearly hazard allowance of Drs. These drs and health workers are exposed to life threatening situations yet they called them greedy, gold diggers etc. When these politicians handle your life the way apc and pdp have handled the country then your eyes will open.

It's a pity. Nigerian youths will read what this man said and still support one politician or one useless pdp or apc.

They know all this tins na, they just choose to remain blind to it. Many of these people would never have smelt wealth if not for Nigerian politics. We really have a long way to go in Africa! For how long can we continue to dash people billions while neglecting key infrastructural projects?

Is this not same Ndume that said the federal government should slash workers salaries since they are not working as a result of the COVID 19?
Wonders shall never end.
The president, vice president, senators and all individuals holding government positions are all scammers.

All the commenters above me, if you like, keep on wailing and insulting these politicians, nothing will change.

If you like don't go and join a political party in your ward and be part of the system, keep on "forming" political analyst or activists. If you want to see changes in this country, join a political party and be part of the system, that's a good place to start.

All these insults and wailing won't solve anything.

Ali Ndume might want to sponsor a bill to slash politicians salary but he knows he won't get any support.

Imagine if we have fifty nairalanders in the senate that will support him? It's very possible.

The first step is to join a political party and be a part of the process. You never can tell how far you'll go. Power will not come and meet you at home.

Wailing and insults won't solve the problem.

I'm already working on joining one

This country is in a mess and we are the ones to fix it

They have been saying this for years and yet no action.

Slash public offices salaries and allowances. This is the only way the country can flourish. The cost of running government in Nigeria is expensive and we have about 80petcrnt citizens who don't earn upto 1$ a day.

And vehicles that will be taking them to and from school.
Not our senators or any , retired, sitting, standing or crawling politicians .

A good and better Nigeria is all we want.
God bless Nigeria.

Modify:
This is one of the conditions we gave the government when the issue of minimum wage was hot....
Read below.....

How to pay minimum wage comfortably,

1. Abolish SECURITY VOTE in NIGERIA. Nigeria will pay N45,000 minimum wage comfortably.

2. a) Abolish CONSTITUENCY PROJECT FUNDS
b) Reduce number of ADVISERS to SENATE PRES(2), HOUSE SPEAKER(2), GOVs(4), PRESIDENT(5), VP(2)
c) Reduce current ALL Political Office Holders PAY CHEQUES by 51.5%, without exception
d) Do away with special remuneration to POLITICAL ADVISERS & PUBLIC SERVANTS e.g; Purchase of Private Vehicles, Houses, granting Govt paid Vacations, paying for 1st & Business Class Transportations, etc, etc...
e) Abolish payment of OVERSEAS MEDICAL BILLS for Political Office Holders.
f) Eliminate PRIVATE PRACTICE in public workforce
g) Eliminate participation of Public Workforce in Partisan Politics.
h) Institute EMPLOYMENT BY MERIT, and eliminate UNDEREMPLOYMENT.
i) Review and eliminate allocation of Govt paid POLITICAL AIDES & SUPPORT STAFF to Political Office Holders.

With (1) + (2) Nigeria would pay a minimum wageof N65,000 comfortably....... (3, 4 and 5 To be completed on another thread)

God bless Nigeria
