For example, when you use those cryptocurrency exchange sites to convert your bitcoin to other currencies. They can trace your address to the exchange site and request your information from them, like the email you used to register for example. And from that email, they can nab you.

That is what happened here. The cryptocurrency exchange site gave the FBI Woodberry's email and they were able to trace that email to an iCloud account and apple then gave them details of the owner of that account.

as they said.... they told the Mules to send the loot to them via bitcoin (which the mules did). how difficult do you think it is for the FBI to put 2 and 2 together?! the phones and email used will all be linked to the phones/laptop found in their possession. its a slam dunk!

any savvy computer hacker specialist will easily show that their laptop/phones were used to access these bitcoin wallets or other bank accounts that were used from the proceeds of these bitcoin wallets. before you can tell the FBI you have a $40M bank account, you need to show them exactly how the money arrive there.

the MONEY TRAIL does not lie. if the money in their accounts was transferred from an account in Nigeria then they will enquire the origin of that said money and so forth, until they find its source. money doesnt appear in a bank account out of nowhere. this is why many criminals have difficulties to launder ill gotten money.

If there's any lesson here, it is simple. Don't Bleep with the US and any organisation within it.

Don't use US search engines, browsers, IM apps, etc. These guys would tender all records to the feds when the chips are down.
