Their names and pictures were revealed on tv. But arresting them is an absolute impossibility because the Russian guys according to the report are members of Russian military.

Dude you need some lecture, how are you going to decrypt bitcoin address that generate code every minutes? They can only get access through the help of the bitcoins company. You can hardly find someone identity on bitcoins even if its hacked most people use fake identity. The money mule guy that's sending the money through bitcoins was approached and I belive he gave them a lot of information that's why the investigation was smooth.

of course these guys sang like birds and gave them up.... do you actually think that these people would protect hush and wood while the FBI was now knocking on there doors and threatening them with decades in jail?! its thanks to these mules, the phone/email exchange they had with the criminals, that they were able to track these bitcoins wallets and its owner.

American tech companies usually provide a backdoor to any account under the scrutiny of state actors like FBI. Forget all the denials by silicon valley companies in the media, if a tech company refuses to cooperate with American Govt, the business will be brought down and they all know this.

True, but they are always loose ends. As long as they know the wallet address, they can trace it to the company that registered it and ask for the company to provide your details. Another way to catch you is through the transactions made by the address.

For example, when you use those cryptocurrency exchange sites to convert your bitcoin to other currencies. They can trace your address to the exchange site and request your information from them, like the email you used to register for example. And from that email, they can nab you.

That is what happened here. The cryptocurrency exchange site gave the FBI Woodberry's email and they were able to trace that email to an iCloud account and apple then gave them details of the owner of that account.

Yes, you're correct that why when you're into this stuff never use wallet from bitpay, coinbase and the rest, they have your detail. Just go with blockchain

Don't use US search engines, browsers, IM apps, etc. These guys would tender all records to the feds when the chips are down.

Regular WhatsApp is end to end encrypted( nobody can look at what you’re sending and understand). However, the backups in iCloud of Google Drive i.e. the transcript, is unencrypted. So they might have accessed those ones.

Also, the fact that the messages are encrypted in transit doesn’t mean that one malware on your phone might not be able to read it

Every transaction on the blockchain is visible for anybody to see in the world. That’s why bitcoin themselves said it in their website to not use the same address more than once.
