e.g the song Jenifa referred to is a popular Yoruba folklore where a girl that refused all suitors in her village thinking she was too pretty for them was married by Ori(head) Ori had to borrow other parts of the body to complete this fine boy image, when Olajumoke now realised that her new groom was a rolling head she wanted to run away and that song was used to call Ori.
Where I'm from we have something similar to this but instead of a rolling head it was a snake and she would sing when the snake would eat her(The song was to tell her parents the man they married her off to was a snake). .In Mandinka.

In ghana the yoruba's were called "alata" and most of them migrated from Ogbomosho so to say they were not present in ghana is been economical with the truth.

Kandikane,

The song goes something like. . . . "ori, ori o; Olajumoke n'lo".

Mahinmi sounds like " Egun" Language like " O Dun Fun mi gan gan" meaning I am "happy" Anyway the yorubas in togo speak ancient yoruba, unlike the diluted lagos Yoruba.

Kandikane,

Ah, but the song is in Mandinka. It's right on the tip of my tongue. undecided I won't be surprised if it's got the same beat as this.

"Jil borri borri jilo, Jil borri borri jilo(I think when the girl sings she calls unto the "borro borro's" because they are usually seen as travellers to tell her parents.

I will have to consult my grandmother about the song because she use to tell us the story and song when I was little. smiley

sleekdot: And where did you get it that they existed at the same time?

My sources said Oyo empire existed between 1650-1750 while your sources said Ashanti existed between 1701 and 1750

Meaning Oyo had 50yrs ahead of Ashanti

What if Oyo empire extended to the Volta between 1650 and 1690?

Just in a bid to attack you neglect common sense

Very respectfully.
First to congratulate you for your beautiful nick.
I write not to disagree, but just to give an opinion on what I have studied.
The real name of the second That Alaafin of Oyo, would have been "Tela".
That Alaafin would have taken the name of Sango divinity for himself, in a war. As far as I can ascertain, such practices were commonly used, ie an Oba to take if the name of a divinity.
I reiterate that my intervention is solely for the input and the contribution of another opinion, and not to doubt your excellent presentation.
I express my warm greetings!
