World Kidney Day is celebrated annually on the 2nd  Thursday in March to raise awareness of kidney failure.

It is estimated that 1 in every 5 Nigerian has kidney failure.

If you know the state of your kidneys early on, you can slow the progression to End stage Renal Failure (the point at which you need dialysis or a kidney transplant to live)

Venue:  E-Centre Yaba
Time:    10am to 3pm

Pathcare laboratories will be partnering with us to do blood glucose test.

@ Ofido, for now we are based in Lagos state. Hopefully we can spread to other states soon.

In the meantime, you can do a kidney screening at any reputable hospital or laboratory.

It consists of the following:
1. A blood pressure measurement
2. A blood glucose measurement
3. A urinalysis to check for proteins

The first 2 looks at if you have the risk factors for developing kidney failure
The 3rd one looks at if your kidneys are already being damaged as protein won't be found in urine if it is normal.

Some statistics on Kidney Failure in Nigeria:

# Incidence of 100 per million population = 15, 000 (new cases emerging each year)
# Prevalence of 300-400 per million population = 45,000 (total cases with disease in a year)
# More fatal than Malaria

Others
# 1 in 5 Nigerians have Chronic Kidney Disease (this progresses to kidney failure)
# 1 in 4 Nigerians have high blood pressure

The stats are not good therefore please screen your kidneys. Prevention is really better than cure!

The stats are scary but true.

They are from hospital studies extrapolated to the general population.

In America where they have done studies, it is estimated that 11% of Americans have Chronic Kidney Disease. In Nigeria, with a black population that makes us inherently predisposed to kidney disease, it is estimated that 18 - 20% are living with Chronic Kidney Disease hence the stats.

We have a higher population of hypertensives because we are black and also infections are common, therefore a higher predisposition to kidney failure.

Herbal medication use, abuse of analgesics and bleaching also cause major damage.

Don't forget to join us on 10th of March, World Kidney Day, for a free kidney screening.
