Luanda would be a different city in 5 years time. Come to think of it, what is fueling this growth, d excess crude money coming into that country's account. The big question is why are there no cranes all over d place in Lagos or Abuja, abi na road dem dey use am build. I don't think so, d snail speed progress that is evidence on road construction is still evident all over d place.   I remember vividly d Lokoja - Abuja road when I  chose to travel by road to Abuja for a friends wedding in 2007, today 13/02/2011 this road has not been completed.

Can Messers Jonathan tell us what he has done with our excess crude fund at this time of a boom, can anyone beleive we are actually in a boom yet d whole economy is so depressed & doomy.
May God help us. undecided

The Nigerian masses are what we call jewmen in Nigerian pidgin. They use ethnic and religious sentiments in all they do.The ones on Nairaland keep abusing IBB about the golf war windfall because oil peaked at 40 dollar per barrel during the golf war.

Oil has remained above 50 dollars for the past 12 years and is even above 100 at the moment, yet these people are still blaming IBB's 40 dollar peak as the cause of our hardship.

Why is it everytime Nigerians see success in another african country the get insecure and decide such success doesn't exist in their country as well with no facts to back their dramatic embarrassing claims

construction in Nigeria for 2011 is predicted to be the fastest growing and most intense in the world. wtf is Luanda

smh, i feel that the least informed people in the world about Nigeria are Nigerians.

Please stop posting those shylocks in Banana Island. The building boom experinced by Luanda are public buildings, public roads upgrades and sateellite Town development, not high rise in Ikoyi where rents of $80, 000.00 a year would not be out of place. How is Banana island worthwile to d average Nigeria.

In Luanda they are building d largest mall in Africa, do u know how many people would be employed in that facility.

Nigeria: Construction 'To Become World's Fastest Growing'

Lagos — Construction growth in Nigeria will be the fastest of all markets, according to the latest 10-year forecast from Global Construction Perspectives and Oxford Economics.

The new study says China will overtake the US as the world's biggest construction market by 2018, but that the fastest growth will happen in Nigeria.

The survey said infrastructure is the hottest sector to be in and that "it is set to grow in emerging markets by a staggering 128 per cent from now to 2020, compared with just 18 percent over the same period in developed countries".

The report, which named Nigeria "global hotspot from here to 2020" says the nation's construction growth is even faster than India's, reflecting increased wealth and urbanisation resulting from the country's oil production.

"Its population of approximately 154 million is urbanising at one of the fastest rates in the world, but construction is now only 3.2 percent of GDP," it said.

It stated that from 2009 to 2020, only Nigeria and India will enjoy higher growth rates than China in their construction output, but that despite India's continued construction boom, China's market will still be between three and four times bigger by 2020.

It says in just ten years, China's already massive construction market will be worth almost US$2.4 trillion, nearly 20 per cent of global construction output.

The ten year forecast indicates that emerging markets will rapidly overtake the construction output of their developed neighbours.

"The top ten highest growth markets in 2020 will be entirely composed of emerging markets, with Poland the only European country to feature on the list," it said.

Speaking at the launch of the report "Global Construction 2020" in London, Mike Betts of Global Construction Perspectives said that China's construction industry looks unstoppable.

"The construction market in China is already enormous at almost double the size of its nearest rival Japan. The United States has for some time held the top spot but despite its strong predicted growth over the next decade, China will become the world's largest construction market by 2018," he said.

Adrian Cooper of leading business forecasters Oxford Economics said: "We have identified the key drivers and used data including population projections, long term GDP estimates and public sector budgets to feed into our modelling to help us understand how the global construction industry is changing at a rapid rate.

"All of the data points to both short and long term growth in emerging markets. We predict that in just ten years time construction in these markets will more than double in size, growing by an estimated 110% and representing 17.2 percent of GDP in 2020."

allAfrica.com

The report highlights that today's global construction market is worth an estimated $7.5 trillion, representing 13.4 percent of global GDP. But by 2020, construction will be a $12.7 trillion global market, an overall growth of 70 per cent in the next decade. Construction in 2020 will account for 14.6 per cent of global GDP.

The largest construction market globally is residential accounting for 40 per cent of the total global construction market by 2020 when it will be worth $5.1 trillion, said the report.

The forecast is already coming true for Nigeria with the federal and state governments policy of developing the nation's infrastructure through Public Private Partnership (PPP) initiatives that have resulted in the concessioning of airports, roads, bridges and public buildings.

We are the 8th Largest oil producer in the world , the first in Africa, we cannot compare the money we make from oil with small Angola who seems to put their money where their mouth is. Most of the pictures u posted are privately driven projects except of some few( mind u Eko Atlantic City is still on the drawing board) the Yardua/Jonathan regime has not completed one Federal Road since they came to office. And the one they completed the Minister of Transport and Gbenga Daniel where fighting each other as to who would cut the tape. The Said bridge meanwhile has not be completed.

Meanwhile Lagos State Government and even Saraki in Kwara State completed a fly-over without all that hullabaloo. This Government is a failed Government. Jonathan is already a wealthy man, you only have to be Governor for one week in that God for saken State of Byalesa to be a millionaire in dollars. So if it is money Jonathan has it, we don't need seat warmers in ASO ROCK we need doers.

dude calm down, you already lost the argument.

what angola is doing is great! nobody will deny that, but to say Nigeria isn't doing the same is insulting to everyone in Nigeria striving to make life better for their kinsmen.

I personally don't want to see Nigeria build a 200,000 person public house project because in America, such projects bred ghettos, crime and warzones.

You can put that man poor people in one concentrated area to live for free. Crime will skyrocket, business will abandon the area. America did it with it's "Projects" in the 50-60s and the results were ugly

plus i want to know which Nigeria culture deems it honorable to have another man build a house for you in the name of being like Luanda.
If the government built my house i would be a loser in Nigeria.

but congrats to Angola, Nigeria and all upwardly mobile african societies,

Knowall you already lost, now your just arguing for the sake of arguing

Angolan Economy Records 92 Percent Growth in Four Years

Quote:
3/30/09 7:18 PM

Luanda – Angolan minister of Economy, Manuel Nunes Júnior, said Monday in Luanda that the country’s economy recorded an average growth rate of 9.6 percent between 1989 and 2007 and a 92.4 percent real growth from 2004 to 2007.

Manuel Júnior, who was speaking at the opening of the Angola-Netherlands Economic-Business Forum, stressed that the Angola economy is among the world’s most growing, following the consolidation of the political stability.

According to the minister, the results show that in four years alone, the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has almost doubled which, he added, is remarkable, as it corresponds to an average annual real growth rate of approximately 17.8 percent.

He stated that Angola has been guaranteeing the national reconstruction and setting steady steps towards the macro-economic stability and development of the basis for a strong economic development.

The minister asserted that the political stability and investments in the rehabilitation and modernisation of the productive infrastructures have been leading to a major flow of goods and people, increase of local and foreign private investment and alteration to the basic structures of the economy.

Mentioning the result of the diversification of the Angolan economy, Manuel Júnior told the Dutch business people that since 2006, the non-oil GDP has been growing at a higher pace than the oil one which, according to him, is a positive sign.

He also mentioned that the national currency (Kwanza) has been stable, playing more effectively its role as a trade and reserve value.

The minister noted that from the period of hyper-inflation of 1996 that reached an accumulated rate of 3,000 percent, the country is recording over the last few years an inflation of about 10 percent (12.2 percent in 2006, 11.79 in 2007 and 12.8 in 2008).

Manuel Junior assured that although affected by the world financial and economic crisis, the Angolan economy will continue to grow in 2009, within an environment of stability and with a rate above three percent (population’s growth rate).

To him, it is fundamental that Angola continues with its poverty and famine fight programme, through the main projects of rehabilitation of infrastructures and foment to the productive activity, coupled with institutional reforms.

You rather 10 million Nigerians continue to live in abject poverty where water, electricity and other mod coms of this world would be non-exist-ant. Those projects no matter how u look at it would have underground sewage, not open sewage common in Ajegunle and other slums of lagos, it would have pipe borne water and electricity. What else does a man need in life apart from these basics.
Re: Has Anyone Seen Luanda Skyline Lately- Cranes All Over D Place by Ikengawo: 7:53pm On Feb 13, 2011
i would rather crime not skyrocket and kill off those 10 million in 'abject poverty'.
Housng projects have failed world wide. Before continuing to argue for the sake of being 'right' instead of sharing and gaining information research housing projects in America and Europe

they're crime ridden, illness plagued and KEEP people in poverty.

and who told you any of the projects in Nigeria have open sewage? you're not even making sense anymore

Re: Has Anyone Seen Luanda Skyline Lately- Cranes All Over D Place by KnowAll(m): 8:14pm On Feb 13, 2011
@ikengawo

Clearly u are one of those Americo-Naija who has never been home except for a couple of weeks when u were a kid. Don't tell me u don't know Ajegunle, in Lagos and Nyanyan in Abuja are some of the worst slums in Nigeria and the population of these places are hideous, bursting into its seams would be an understatement. The squalor and misery that stirs u in the face is unbelievable.

Yet u are going on about some elitist projects in Nigeria. The experiment called Nigeria has failed miserable except something urgent is done to arrest it immediately. Well I would not dispute it if they take a head count of Nigerians who are worth a million dollars and more,  we would come up on tops because of the in-bred gluttons put together in that damned place called Nigeria who only think of themselves and their families.

PDP encompasses  all that is bad and wrong with Nigeria and since we practice a semblance of what can be called a democracy it suffices us citizens of these damned land to turn our anger and grievances at the only authority we feel they have failed us by voting the whole lot of them out of power, these heartless men who run our country has pass their sell buy date, they have driven the country to the dogs,  A WIN FOR BB would the closest thing to a revolution.

@Ikengawo,

Knowall does have a point. For the sort of money we have been earning from oil & gas for 12yrs, Nigeria should have done more.

I dont accept your take on Social housing, it might have been a failure in the US, but has been more or less a success in the UK, and other European countries. it is essential, as not everyone even with the best will in the world are going to be able to build a decent house for themselves, and that's a real fact.

The issue with social housing is maintenance, if properly looked after, I believe it could work.

That is no excuse for us to be ingratiations to our country.(2 million barrel is no small money even if our population is 1 BILLION) The fact that we have 150 million people should make any sensible govt. to build an enabling environment so that private enterprise would grow and fester. We have comparative advantage over Angola because we have the population. Angola has not got the population but they have got the money.

What the government needs to do in Nigeria is either concessionalize all major roads, rail, electricity or build them,  every other thing would fall in place and we would have a economy the size of the US if all hands are on deck.
Re: Has Anyone Seen Luanda Skyline Lately- Cranes All Over D Place by EzeUche2(m): 8:31pm On Feb 13, 2011
Let us face facts that Nigeria is a Rentier State that doesn't try to use the tremendous amount of money that we get from oil to work on behalf of all citizens. Only a corrupt 1% of the nation are able to enjoy the oil wealth, while the rest of the country is to fend for themselves.

Only a few leaders, like Fashola, Sullivan Chime, Oshiomhole, Amaechi and Godswill Akpabio are the only governors worth mentioning in this entire country.

"Note that after Luanda, the CAC is considering the possibility of expanding to the city of Lobito.
