A Federal High Court in Lagos on Thursday ordered the Peoples Democratic Party’s governorship candidate in Lagos State, Dr. Ade Dosunmu, to suspend his campaigns until the determination of a suit filed by a PDP member, Mr. Oluowo Adeyeri.



In her ruling over the alarm raised by Adeyeri that Dosunmu had been campaigning in spite of the pending suit, Justice Binta Murtala-Nyako held that as far as the court was concerned, there was no governorship candidate for the PDP in Lagos until the resolution of the matter.



Adeyeri, a delegate to the January 10 PDP Congress in Lagos State where Dosunmu emerged as the governorship candidate of the party, had filed a suit, challenging the contestant’s eligibility. Adeyeri predicated the suit on the grounds that Dosunmu did not meet the constitutional requirements as the PDP candidate.



The plaintiff named Dosunmu, the PDP, the chairman of the Lagos State PDP Governorship Screening Committee, chairman of Lagos State PDP Governorship Election Panel and the Independent National Electoral Commission as co-defendants.



At the resumed hearing of the matter on Thursday, lawyer to Dosunmu, Mr. Dele Oguntade (SAN), told the court that he was yet to receive the processes filed in the matter. He added that he had also filed a preliminary objection, challenging the plaintiff’s locus standi to file the suit.



But Adeyeri’s lawyer, Mr. Tunde Akinrimisi, raised the alarm that Dosunmu had concluded plans to inaugurate his governorship campaign on Friday (today) in spite of the suit. Akinrimisi further urged the judge to stop the defendants from doing anything that would foist a fait accompli on the court.



But Justice Murtala-Nyako directed Dosunmu to refrain from inaugurating the campaign until the determination of the suit and urged his lawyers to advise him accordingly.



The case has been adjourned till February 23.
