The Rwang Pam stadium, Jos, venue of yesterday’s PDP presidential campaign in Plateau State was almost empty, as very few people turned out to witness the occasion.

Untill the rally commenced and rounded up around 12 noon, only the VIP stand and the stand next to it appeared filled with people as other parts of the stadium were virtually empty. PDP stalwarts from the state, including, former Deputy Senate President Ibrahim Mantu and Alhaji Yahaya Kwande were also visibly absent from the venue. The rally was hitch free as the president and other members of his entourage addressed the crowd and departed around noon for Makurdi, the Benue state capital. Daily Trust observed high security presence in Jos as policemen and soldiers mounted sentry in almost all parts of the town, while major roads leading to the stadium were blocked.

But less than 30 minutes after President Goodluck Jonathan departed the venue of the rally, there was stampede in Jos town, following rumours of a yet to detonate bomb discovered at the Joseph Gomwalk Way.

Motorists and commuters fled the area while security men ran to the area to ascertain the problem.

The road from the “Nigeria Standard” Junction to the Polo round-about was cordoned and vehicles were forced to take other routes as the security operatives investigated the cause of the stampede.

It was later discovered after about an hour, that the “bomb” was an old car antenna, which was discovered by some youths, who raised an alarm.

Spokesman of the STF, Captain Charles Ekeocha, confirmed to Daily Trust, that the device discovered was not a bomb, but an old car antenna and that the device had been taken to the STF office.

Earlier at the rally, President Goodluck Jonathan said the Goodluck/ Sambo campaign team had no enemy. He said his government would not discriminate against any part of Nigeria. Jonathan, who promised to ensure improvement in agriculture, transport, education, water supply sectors among others, said his government has managed to achieve a relative power supply across the nation, adding that before the first quarter of this year, power would stabilize reasonably.
