The junta that seized power in Mali wants a military-led transitional body to rule for three years and has agreed to release ousted president Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, a source in a visiting West African delegation said Sunday.

"The junta has affirmed that it wants a three-year transition to review the foundations of the Malian state. This transition will be directed by a body led by a soldier, who will also be head of state," a source in the ECOWAS delegation in capital Bamako told AFP.

"The government will also be predominantly composed of soldiers" under the junta's proposal, the source said on condition of anonymity.

The source added that the junta has agreed to "free president Keita", who has been detained along with other political leaders since the coup on Tuesday, and he "will be able to return to his home" in Bamako.

"And if he wants to travel abroad for treatment, that is not a problem," the ECOWAS source said.

Prime minister Boubou Cisse, who has been detained with Keita at a military base outside the capital where the coup began, would be moved to a secure residence in the city, the source said.

A junta official confirmed to AFP the decisions on the fate of Keita and Cisse, as well as that "the three-year transition would have a military president and a government mostly composed of soldiers".

The coup followed months of protests calling for Keita to resign as public discontent with the government grew over the country's brutal Islamist insurgency and collapsing economy.

While it was met by international condemnation, thousands of opposition supporters celebrated the president's ouster in the streets of Bamako.

The junta has said it "completed the work" of the protesters and has vowed to stage elections "within a reasonable time".

However Mali's neighbours have called for Keita to be reinstated, saying the purpose of the visit by the delegation from the regional ECOWAS bloc was to help "ensure the immediate return of constitutional order".

Tuesday's coup was Mali's second in eight years, and has heightened concern over regional stability as its jihadist insurgency that now threatens neighbouring Niger and Burkina Faso.

If military rule will make things work for them, I am totally in support of it. If democratic rule will not work, I'd kick against it. It's high time we stopped copying the Western world and do something that will work well for us by charting a new course in our continent and country's own growth part. Democracy isn't working for most W. African countries truth be told.

If the military juntas will justify their rule as a way of bringing political stability for their country or rescuing it from the threat of "dangerous ideologies then it's a go ahead because these juntas tend to portray themselves as a neutral party that can provide interim leadership in times of turmoil, and also tend to portray civilian politicians as corrupt and ineffective.

They will be worse off.
Military regimes comes in the name of salvation army and would later turn to monsters. Agreed that the Civilian president of Abubakar Keita has not done well, but he has attracted international support in his fight against the Al-Qaida in the Maghreb. EU and NATO has some troops stationed there.

Economically, Mali has not fared well same with her other West African States. If not checked, those military boys will be worse.

They should hand over back power to the civilian regime!

Makes sense to me.
Democratic rule have been soft on terrorists. That is why the GEJ Administration of then proffer the carrot and stick approach to Boko Haram and BokoHaram used that advantage to acquire swathes of territories in the North before we decide to use our number 6.

It could have been the softness of democratic rule that brought about Boko Haram, ISWAP, Alquaeda, Tuareg rebels into Mali. I feel for the soldiers and the people. They feel that their country will not be under occupation of terrorists had it being that the military was the Head of State.
Libya came under terrorist siege when democratic rule began. Prior to that the same UN were the ones that wanted Gadaffi to dialogue with terrorists but he instead said no and scourged them with scorpion's cruelty and brutality. Gaddafi's reaction towards the terrorists who are the citizens of Libya was what led to his overthrow by NATO, UN and US forces.

When has military rule ever worked? They're just as corrupt as the civilians. Build stronger institutions instead of placing the soldiers above the constitution. It's only Africans that can't make anything work and will complain about copying the west as a problem.

Beautiful !!!!

For those kids quoting me, let it be know today that all the mega projects and infrastructure Nigeria have was executed in the military regimes.

Your civilisation and democracy did nothing in Nigeria apart from empowering their friends and family.

mrsteel:

U are d kid here!
It means u know little about Nigeria history
From 1960 to 1999 did military even allowed civilian to rule? How do u expect democracy to perform magic? If only a civilian had ruled, it would have still be far better!

1999 till date is greater than 1960 to 1998
You have sold larger crude oil for more monetary value in the former than the latter which bridges up the gap in time value for money.

Your country human resources is far better in this your 1999 period till date than the 1960 - 1999 period

So what are ur excuses for not performing better?
The military outshined your civilisation, it is bitter but the truth
Quote me and discuss intelligently
