Monday Ubani, a former Second Vice President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), has bemoaned the hardship being experienced by Nigerians under the Muhammadu Buhari administration, saying the government has been very unfair to the suffering masses.

Speaking in an interview with INDEPENDENT, Ubani who expressed disgust at the recent increase in the price of petrol and electricity tariff said it is unfortunate that rather than looking for ways to ameliorate the pains of Nigerians, the government is adding more to it through the increase in prices of social services.

“I think the government of President Muhammadu Buhari is very unfair to Nigerians with the increase virtually in everything. If you recall, there was an increase in Value Added Tax (VAT) and then skyrocketing of food items. Look at how much we used to buy a bag of rice and how much we are using to buy a bag of rice now.

“If you want to save money in the bank now, even if you are saving N100b, you will not get an interest that is more than 0.7 per cent under this dispensation. Unlike previously, we were getting up to 15 per cent as interest on our savings.

“Today, the sufferings are so much; the rate of unemployment is high. We under the COVID-19 pandemic era where full economic activities have not resumed; so we expect that the government will bring some palliatives in terms of economic measures to help Nigerians but they are not doing that. What they are doing is increasing prices of virtually everything, including social services".

“Rather than looking for ways to bring the prices down, the government is increasing the prices of everything beyond the purchasing power of the common man and making it look as if this government was brought to punish Nigerians.”

Speaking further, Ubani said while the government promised change in 2015 which was not experienced by Nigerians, it also promised taking Nigeria to the next level in 2019 which is a reverse of what Nigerians are experiencing now.

“It is very unfortunate what we are getting from a government that promised change and remove the sufferings of the poor. They also promised Next Level.

“You now ask yourself ‘what was the next level?’ Were they promising next level of punishment?; because that is what we are experiencing now. Were they promising next level of economic strangulation?

“What was this next level? We are not seeing the next level that they promised which would have given us the assurance that they want to change things for the better.

“Things are degenerating on a daily basis. Is it on the issue of insecurity, the collapse of the educational sector and deterioration of economic life?”

Accommodates them right, they brought this upon themselves. Lots of daft minds. The penalizations that's being melted to Nigerians by this present administration is well deserving and felicitous as they had the cull for a better governance but instead opt to suffer. Let no one mention me as I will pounce on such individual with immediate alacrity
