Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo on Friday regretted that some public commentators make baseless assertions on the economy.

He, therefore, stressed the need for academics to be more involved in conversations that would deepen public knowledge and understanding of the economy.

According to a statement by his spokesman, Laolu Akande, the Vice President spoke in his keynote at the 61st annual conference of the Nigerian Economic Society with the theme, ‘African Continental Free Trade Area in post COVID-19 era: What next for Nigeria?’

Akande’s statement was titled, ‘Africa should use AfCFTA as template for trade negotiations with rest of the world, says Osinbajo.’

He quoted Osinbajo as calling on members of NES to be more engaged in public policy debates.

He said, “I find it every often that some public commentators make assertions that have no basis in economic theory or practice, and because they dominate the public space, they contribute to public misunderstanding of economic principles and their application to public policy.

“Some of you should take up the gauntlet and help to shape an informed and reasoned national discourse on the economy.”

Osinbajo noted that as African countries brace up for the implementation of AfCFTA agreement, efforts must be made to ensure that trade negotiations with the rest of the world are based on the free trade agreement rather than deals separately endorsed by regional economic blocs.

This, he said, was one of the ways by which the continent could maximise the benefits of the agreement.

He said, “One important objective of the AfCFTA is to overcome the economic fragmentation of the continent by bringing the regional economic blocs together in a common arrangement.

“This being the case, African countries should look to negotiating trade treaties with other parts of the world on the basis of AfCFTA rather than through arbitrarily designed regional blocs.

“African countries should not allow themselves to be lured into arrangements which do not serve their long-term development objectives.

“We must, of course, continue to bear in mind, especially here in Nigeria that the AfCFTA is not a magic wand that automatically brings about growth and prosperity.

“The reality is that if care is not taken, trade liberalisation can expose the Nigerian economy to unfair competition and sharp trade practices, with adverse consequences for our producers who might have to close down their businesses, and for our workers who would then lose their jobs.”

Osinbajo said the successful implementation of the AfCFTA required financing to address various implementation challenges and to promote arrangements in support of integration.

Still can't digest how a professor turned out to be a vice to a man with an imaginary certificate.......the repercussion of that singular act is where we are today........Osibanjo is yet to understand that our economy is on reverse.......someone needs to bring him up to speed.

That’s very correct. And they always come back in shame to prostrate and apologise. Who God has blessed, no man can curse.

Some of their agents are already here with their baseless hatred and bitterness filled souls.

You have nothing to worry about as no weapon formed against you shall prosper and any tongue that rise against you in judgement shall be condemned.

cool

Fani Kayode, Reno omokirikiri, Jackson UDE, Timi Frank

What Osinbajo is fighting hard for are local entrepreneurs battling strong competition from other African countries

Take Airline for instance, imagine if trade agreement is reached on Africa Free trade, South African Airways would instantly come hard for small market share Air Peace and Allen Onyeama is enjoying

Kidnapping in Nigeria exaggerated — Osinbajo
June 25, 2019

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has downplayed the cases of kidnapping in Nigeria, saying they were sometimes exaggerated for political effect.

Mr Osinbajo was addressing Nigerians based in New York on Monday when he was confronted with questions about kidnapping, which is a major part of Nigeria’s worsening insecurity.

“With respect to general kidnapping which we have seen in parts of the country, again, this is not entirely new. In fact, some of the kidnapping stories you read or listen to are simply not true anywhere, some are fuelled by politics,” Mr Osinbajo was reported as saying by the state-run News Agency of Nigeria.

“There are cases of kidnapping, no question at all about that, but some of the more dramatic stories that you hear are simply not true.

“Every report of kidnapping we receive, we try to verify, and at the end of the day you find out that people just tell all sorts of stories,” the vice-president said.

No, not totally true sir.
People make comments based on their level of understanding and perception.
Unfortunately, many of this government's media persons have goofed severally. Telling obvious lies and defending the 'undefendable'.

That is not to say we don't have propagandists and obvious liers, but in all honesty Sir, many of the opinion you read on Nairaland, Twitter and Facebook are honest opinions and feelings of the average Nigerian.
