British-Nigerian Hollywood actor; Adedayo Bamidele John Adegboyega Actor has said he would “absolutely drop everything” to star in the upcoming adaptation of Tomi Adeyemi’s young adult fantasy novel Children of Blood and Bone. Boyega paid tribute to Adeyemi in an essay for Time's 100 Most Influential People of 2020, talking about the importance of representation and hailed her as the “god of ideas.”

Adeyemi’s series is rooted in the pantheon of Yoruba gods and is set in a universe where magic, bestowed by Yoruba deities, has been suppressed and its users called maji are oppressed. It follows a young girl called Zélie Adebola, who is descended from maji, and her quest to restore magic to the world.

Boyega described Adeyemi’s book as a “cross between Harry Potter, the Chronicles of Narnia and Yoruba gods”, saying that he reread it multiple times then listened to the audiobook.

He continued, “It’s so important to have representation within books like this. In school, I realised that only when my teacher considered my point of view did learning become easier.”

Adeyemi’s book was picked up by Disney last year and has since signed This Is Us writer Kay Oyegun to pen the screenplay. Star Wars producer Kathleen Kennedy, who worked with Boyega on the recent trilogy, has also signed on and Dope’s Rick Famuyiwa is set to direct.

If Boyega were to be cast in the Adeyemi adaptation, possible lead roles that could be open to the star include Inan, the tortured prince of Orïsha, or Tzain, the level-headed brother of the series’ protagonist.

The movie is being adopted from the award winning Children of Blood and Bone book written by Tomi Adeyemi - a Nigerian American writer and Harvard graduate.

The multi-million dollar movie will be directed by another Hollywood star of Nigerian descent - Rick Famuyiwa. This movie is expected to unite several Nigerian icons in the diaspora.

True. But that will be after Africa decides to put her house in order and do away with gross corruption and incompetence in high places.

Exactly. Many Nigerians that were born and raised here in the US now mostly identify as Nigerians first. The reality is - you cannot change your ancestry and roots. Even though you were born and raised abroad, your name and sometimes skin tone will easily give you away as a Nigerian immigrant. My cousins that were born and raised here, if most people ask them where are they from and they say California, people will still ask them the same question: ”where are you from? Where are you from, originally?”
Why the persistent questions? Because of their names and heritage. You cannot be bearing Adedayo or Chuwkudi and say you are originally from America. That's not possible!

See the screenshots below. That's Nneka Ogwumike. Do you know that she plays for the US national basketball team but she still introduces herself as a Nigerian in most cases? Same with NBA superstars like Victor Oladipo, Josh Okogie, Masai Ujiri and the likes.
No matter where you were born or raised. When you are alone with your thoughts, you will know where you are really from. Your ancestors and your roots will remind you.

That's right but it beholds on every one of us. What stops us from building our motherland and stop running to western countries - where we are treated as lesser human beings? We can build our country and Continent and restore our dignity as human beings.
