In a few days, eligible voters in Ondo state will hit the poll to choose who will govern the state for the next four years.

Ondo state did not hold governorship election when other states in the country held theirs during the 2019 general election.

This is because of an electoral upheaval that happened sometimes in 2017.

According to the Independent National Electoral Commission, 1,822,346 people in the state who are above 18 years have registered to vote during the Ondo 2020 election slated for 10 October.

About 17 political parties will participate in the Ondo 2020 governorship election. They include: All Progressives Congress (APC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), among others.

Below are 5 things you need to know about the Ondo 2020 governorship election:

1. No woman is contesting in the election.

Although INEC has cleared 17 candidates from different political parties to participate for this election, all of them are males.

But of all the 17 candidates, only three are popular.

2. Top contenders

The present Governor, Arakurin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, APC; Eyitayo Jegede, PDP; and Agboola Ajayi, ZLP, who is the state deputy governor.

The trio are not only popular and but have also built strong political structure across the 18 local government areas of the state.

Jegede, who stood as the PDP candidate in 2016, will contest for the second time.

The three candidates are lawyers. They each come from the three senatorial districts of the state. Akeredolu hails from Ondo North; Jegede from Ondo Central while Ajayi comes from Ondo South.
