Kidnap: Victim collapses, dies after N10m ransom

Mr Chukwudi Onwu, who was kidnapped alongside three other executive members of the Amaigbo Town Union, reportedly died yesterday shortly after their release by their captors.

They were abducted on February 19, during a meeting of the union at Amaigbo, headquarters of Nwangele Local Government Area of Imo State.

They were reportedly released in the early hours of yesterday after the community had paid more than N10 million ransom to the kidnappers. The joy of the people was however cut short when Onwu “collapsed and died” as some elders of the community arrived to collect the freed victims.

“They have been released but Onwu collapsed and died as he was being collected,” said a relation of the deceased. The source further said that Onwu’s remains had been deposited in a mortuary.

Other executives abducted with Onwu, who was the 2nd vice president, included the President-General, Mr Kenneth Eso, the 1st Vice President, retired Maj. Dan Azubuike and the Treasurer, Mr Okey Anyiam.

The abductors initially demanded N200 million ransom, while the community offered to pay N10 million.

When contacted, the spokesman of the state police command, Mr Linus Nwaiwu, said that he had yet to be briefed. (NAN)

Kaaaaaii, they should have never paid that ransom. At least, he died knowing the community cares greatly about him.
