it will not be a waste if the govt allow its own economy to develop and flourish.
not when the economic advantage of doing business is in the ugly when you are competing with its neighbours

It won't cause war. If Egypt strike the dam, they will surely be sanctioned cause they will be seen as the aggressor.
Though it will really affect Egypt cause they really depend on it for their survival.

The question has to be what's a bigger existential threat long term the dam or sanctions. I dont think they'll strike either at this point. They best bet is to leverage in war scenario is to leverage Ethiopia ethic divisions against them. Divide and conqure works well. Work to balkanize the country.

We can easily move from hydropower to nuclear or coal power stations. Solar is another option owing to the abundant supply of sunlight in the country.
Some argue against nuclear due to safety concerns but hey we only got.to sit our asses up and stop being lazy. Nuclear energy is practicable in Nigeria. We only need highly trained personell to man the stations.

You have not even achieved 5% of hydro energy and you want to practice clean energy.

So many paper graduates in Nigeria.

Egypts military is more power than Ethiopias. That doesn't mean any war scenario is desirable because of loses. There's not much to debate there.

Egypt going to war will wreck the Egyptian economy bro.

Ethiopia is more than 2000km away from Egypt. See the war wey Nigeria government dey fight inside her territory sef, see the billions of dollars wey don enter am.

Ethiopia knows Egypt can't do anything about it, that's why they are building it, and will likely be completed by 2022 though they have been making use of it since like 2016 or so.

Even Sudan sef don give up about the dam issue

They fought a war before without their economy getting wrecked. War is always a costly affair that goes without saying. All they would need to do leversge their superior fighter jets to destroy the target. Ethopia is landlocked so entering in from north is best option especially if they fund Tigrey militants. Remember this just hypothetical war scenario.

This mammoth project of 740 billion CFA francs (1.1 billion euros / $1.3 billion) is co-financed by the World Bank, African Development Bank (AfDB), Islamic Development Bank and French Development Agency.
"The only solution that can solve the recurring problem of food insecurity in Niger is the Kandadji dam because there will be 45,000 hectares (111,200 acres) of land that will be developed to improve production," says Ousmane Danbadji, head of the Network of journalists for water and sanitation (Rejea) and an expert on the matter.

The dam agency forecasts that 400,000 more tonnes of rice, corn and vegetables will be produced each year in a country where 80 percent of the population lives off traditional agriculture, dependent on rains.

A 130-megawatt power station is due to be built in Kandadji, aiming to generate enough electricity annually to enable Niger to free itself from its energy dependence on neighbouring Nigeria.

Barely 15 percent of more than 20 million Nigeriens have electricity, according to the Nigelec electricity company.

This project will be a boom for these people since they can abandon they dependence on Nigeria. How this effects Nigeria's power and water long term isn't their concern. I just find it interesting it's the evil French that partly financed this project.

It will only affect the volume of water in the north west states of Kebbi, Niger and Kwara but Kogi, Delta Anambra and Bayelsa will still get relatively the same volume of water because of the Benue River which joins the Niger in Kogi state.

The first reasonable response!
Whatever Niger republic does to river Niger can only affect NW and parts of NC states. States/regions in the lower Niger basin particularly from Anambra to the Atlantic ocean will feel very little or no impact at all. This is because this areas are in the rainforest belt that receive rainfall all year round, coupled with the fact that other major rivers like the Benue also feed the lower niger.

Bottom line, the threat is limited to NW and NC.

This will effect the hrdropower plants. All four of them are in the NW. I guess the Niger's exports could cover that shortfall but they probably charge market rates. Who knows if they will prioritize Nigerians over their citizens who don't have access to power.

The Niger dam can be filled up slowly.

With filling it up slowly, downstream won't experience any adverse effects.

The timeline has been presented. Is 6 years slow enough for Nigeria to experience no adverse effects?

6 years is okay. It takes between 5 to 10 years to slowly fill up a dam to prevent shortage of water downstream. It can even be filled faster during the raining seasons we have here in Nigeria.

Remember that many tributaries of River Niger in Nigeria overflow their banks while causing flooding in adjoining plains, so faster filling of any upstream dam will be done during our rainy seasons within those proposed 6 years.

First contrarian opinion on the topic. I guess we'll see if Niger's EIA report was correct about its effects being minimal to Nigeria . If there's little threat of anything going wrong who knows why Nigeria agreed to those treaties. Who knows if Benin Republic from doing one next who wants to be dependent if they are successful.

The loss, through evaporation and modification of the Niger River water flows, in Nigeria will be low -2.8% at Yidere-Bode, 2.3% at Jebba and 0.6% at Lokoja.

It will benefit Anambra and other states like Edo that get flooded by river niger almost on yearly basis. At least the volume of water wi reduce.
