“FAKE NEWS” – That was the Nigerian Army’s first response to reports that its personnel opened fire at the #EndSARS protest ground in Lekki, Lagos state.

The army shared a picture of a post claiming that soldiers were directed “to shoot at peaceful, unarmed #EndSARS protesters” at the tollgate, stamping it with “FAKE NEWS”, its usual signature to debunk whatever it considers unfavourable.

But with time, it became clear that the army might have a different definition of “fake news” from the common reference to misinformation and disinformation.

Between the time it shared the first post and Saturday, when it appeared before the Lagos panel of enquiry, the army has debunked 18 social media posts relating to the incident – but it has also gone ahead to admit most of them.

Likewise Babajide Sanwo-Olu, governor of Lagos, whose initial response was to blame the Lekki shooting on “forces beyond our direct control.”

Sanwo-Olu is yet to react to the claim of the army that he invited them to Lekki tollgate

Having followed developments around the Lekki shooting up till this moment, we bring you a timeline of inconsistencies between the Lagos government and the army:

October 20: Lagos declared a 24-hour curfew following the violence that broke out amid the #EndSARS protests. It later shifted the commencement of the curfew from 4pm to 9 pm.

October 20: The army denied reports that soldiers were at the Lekki tollgate. Through its official Twitter handle, it made the denial six times, asking people to “beware of fake news”.

October 20: Gbenga Omotoso, Lagos commissioner of information, said the governor has ordered a probe into “reports of shooting at the Lekki Toll Plaza”. Hours after, the governor promised to “get to the root” of the shooting which he blamed on “forces beyond our direct control.”

October 21: Sanwo-Olu said, contrary to reports of mass deaths, no one died as a result of the shooting.

October 22: The governor said he was not aware of the person who instructed the military to be at the tollgate, telling Arise TV: “Who gave instructions for military to be there? It is still something we are investigating. And we have escalated it to the highest level of military formation.”

He also told the television station that two dead bodies had been found linked to the incident in Lekki.

October 26: The governor said the army was responsible for the shooting. He had told CNN: “From the footage we could see, because there were some cameras at that facility, it seems to me that they would be men in military uniform—it should be Nigerian Army or something.”

October 27: The army admitted in a statement that its personnel were at the tollgate but claimed they were deployed only after being invited by the Lagos government. Osoba Olaniyi, a spokesperson of army’s 82 division in Lagos, however, insisted that soldiers “did not shoot at any civilian” during the protest.

October 29: Sani Usman, former spokesman of the Nigerian Army, said soldiers deployed in the Lekki tollgate fired blank bullets – not live bullets. According to him, “if you look at the canisters, they were blank ammo and blank ammo don’t even kill. At a close range, maybe 100-metres, it will have some pigmentation on your skin.”

November 14: At the hearing of the Lagos panel of enquiry, Ahmed Taiwo, a brigadier general of the Nigerian Army, said the army “was unhappy that he (Sanwo-Olu) said he did not ask the army to intervene” in the protest. He also said soldiers deployed to quell the protests wouldn’t have gone with catapults.”

Ibrahim Taiwo, commander of the 81 division, however, said the governor did the right thing by inviting soldiers to restore order during the #EndSARS protest in the state.

Even if you do video of this

Zombies will not agree.

Even if Buhari comes out to take responsibility and apologize

Zombies especially Nairaland chapter will not agree

They will still say he did it for peace and as their loving father

A country that prefers a father to a sane President as if they are all fatherless.

Citizens like to take this people serious. NEVER TRUST ALL THESE OCCULT PEOPLE. ALL THESE THINGS HAVE BEEN PRE-PLANNED FROM THE BEGINNING. Accusation and counter accusations and it will go on and off and at the end of the day, no single conclusion will come to pass. I just pity those waiting for the end results. Politicians and military know how to catch cruise on citizens. These wont be different. Tomorrow now, sanwo olu will gift all military leaders in the state brand new cars for their support during #ENDSARS and the family of the victims will still be nursing pains and agony. Useless people raised to permutation and combination of 30 all together.

To anyone who sees this comment...

Can you recall that since the past 3 weeks, there have been some particular elements that occupied front page to vehemently deny the killings of their own compatriots? You recall how they did not only lie but kept on lying everyday and night, liking their own comments and creating counter posts? Calling it fake news, calling it old videos?

Recall they even went ahead to initially argue that no soldiers were there? Now what does that tell you? These people are paid agents. I don't want y'all engaging them like they're just opinionated. Definitely no! They are paid to keep peddling lies and falsehood to weaken the morale of the public. It's all by design.

Despite this denial and counter accusations, the presence of Army at the scene of the attack was certain.

The question of who gave the order is however subjective and the logic could be mapped out by considering the line of authorities in the situation. As claimed, the Lagos State government might have no authority to order the deployment of army but by prerogative of her office she could make a request which is likely to be granted by superior order in the military hierarchy. Buhari being the commander in chief of armed forces is likely to accent the order

However, the role of fake news in influencing the sequence of events after the shooting can not discarded. How can any one have access to a document instructing soldier to shoot at civilian? This are like classified documents and getting access to them might require a level of compliance which might take times. But the prepondance of claims, fake videos, edited print, photoshop and dead bodies, misrepresentation and other information that flooded the social media pointing accusing finger at Tinubu was an organized conspiracy. The anti Tinubu voices is regional and we are well aware of it. Most of them are the peddler of Tinubu 2023 ambition which can not be proven. This misinformation were deliberately targeted at inciting Lagosian against Tinubu as it materialized shortly after. The dead and destruction that followed surpassed the casualties at Lekki toll gate.

It is such a shame that an institution like the Nigerian
Army has an alarming integrity deficit! Even more shameful is the fact that these series of lies have evidently been told needlessly to the public and yet no one from the COAS to all the Commanding and Public relations personnel has been fired/queried or even seen the need to resign!

The unfortunate Nigerian public is still caught in the morbid fear of the military that they have no respect for civil authorities! To worsen it all, we have a dead masquerade for a president who continues to fail gallantly in all his responsibilities with zero integrity!

As for Lagos state governor, he is just mad! Then that shitty presidency goon called Femi Adesina will open that rotten orifice of his to say Buhari acted as a father! Bottom feeders!

I don't blame the Government that sent the army. I blame the army that killed their fellow Nigerians. Even though it is the president that gives you the order to do this, you have a code of conduct that puts the lives of Nigerians before any other thing, they have brains to think also, we cant entrust our security to ZOMBIES but they broke this Oath for most likely MONEY

Lagos government lied - true and agreed
army lied - true and agreed

how come no one is talking about the lies of the people by polluting the media by fake pictures and videos that are not even related to lekki shooting. making the whole incident a joke.

I blame those people and they must all be punished. their actions alone can cause more damage than the shooting.

the government and the army are not the only one lying and denying here undecided

our justice orientation is messed up

This government is a government of lies and denials. Either a report about them is true or false, they must first deny it. They are never straight. I don't know what they gain in fake news and deception.

On Lekki killings, how many lies do the useless cowards army want to tell us before the end of the sittings? One week, one lie. Shame on you people.

I am a huge buharist. I know it will not be easy to admit, but there were shooting at the lekki tool gate on that day. Weather people died is what has not been ascertain with DJ switch given different number of victims and supposed dead victims resurrecting. Sanwo Olu said here in this video that Military were at the tool gate.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0tiFZ8NCeTc

Then the Army on their own saying that they actually was at the toll gate that day but didn't fire live Amunition at the protesters on this video.
