I understand one can get cheap or even cheaper cars in japan but the cost of RORO shipment to africa is scary and makes them not profitable (biz sense).or do you know any reliable forwarder or shipper who ships cars and vans from japan to lagos cheap?please direct me to one.
Finally, I don't understand why a 96-97 406 conversion is much costlier than a 98-2000 version.please explain to me.

No offense to the OP and poster but you just solidified what Herr Dokkter Sienna said and that I agreed with. You can't possibly measure these things with your "eyes". There are critical measurements, critical frame integrity that the bulkhead ensures that if compromised will leed to issues that will be ultimately blamed on alignment, etc

Good enough is for horse courses, not for precise engineering.

In 96-97 model, we change the 2 dooor mats together with the control buttons, that increases the cost somehow also note that what determines the cost of converting a car is not absolutely the year or model but the availability and cost of the dashboard and rack among other things.

On the issue of shipping, i will check  for it, i mean a cheaper means of shipping fron Japan.

1) Steering rack.
2) Dash / fascia (some recent models have a massive steel frame that supports the dash, pedal box, aircon / heater assembly and steering column).
3) Pedal box (very critical).
4) Steering column (very critical).
5) Instrument cluster (some models have a symmetrical cluster, so will fit both LHD and RHD cars).
6) Complete aircon / heater assembly (runs the width of the car, behind the dash, critical).
7) Aircon high-pressure hoses.
8] Wiper assembly / mechanism + arms.
9) Centre console (some models have console angled towards the driver).
10) Gear shift knob with release button (auto only).
11) Dash wiring harness (or RHD harness can be extended, if the technician knows his onions, retaining OBD / OBDII / EOBD capability).
12) Heater / aircon air ducting.
13) Glovebox (some models have a symmetrical glove box lid, so will fit both LHD and RHD cars).
14) Handbrake lever (if it's unique to LHD and RHD models).

Please beware! The same fellow who is promising to convert a car for you did the one that i currently using and the work was horrible. I had to redo the job by taking it someone else to correct all the mistakes. I wont recommend that you use a RHD to LHD converted car, but if you must do a proper due diligence.

My experience with this is not a pleasant one at all.

Before you import those righty drives, I think it is very important you make some basic enquiry concerning the conversion of the car when it arrives Naija unless you want to sell it as right drive. But if you planning to convert it to left drive, this below information might be of help.
1. Make enquiry about the availability of the car dashboard in the Nigerian market, if the dashboard cannot be sourced locally and you are not willing to import from abroad, save yourself the stress of importing such car. DO NOT CUT YOUR RIGHTY DASHBOARD AND FIX IT BACK TO LEFT DRIVE, IT IS RISKY. Recently a customer brought two Nissan laurel 2000 and 2002 model for drive conversion and I searched for the dashboard for one good week without getting them, presently those two cars are now abandoned pending when their dashboards are available.
2.Do not allow the person converting the car to use the old righty dashboard and steering in converting to left drive. This has severe implication on the alignment of the wheels and balance of the car after conversion
3. make sure that the persons converting the car knows about auto rewiring very well, this together with panel beating work are the two most technical aspect of drive conversion. Most operations of modern day cars are electronic based and during drive conversion, all the wiring connections in a car are disengaged. It takes an auto technician who is well grounded in art to accurately fix those wires together without the car having code problem in some cases. Check inserted pictures to understand what I mean.
4. Finally, try and get the cost and duration it will take to convert your car especially for those who are always in haste to carry the car. The cost of converting a car can range from 150k to 600k.

Example 97-99 Peugeot 406 can go for 180k while 2000 model can go for 190k,
a Toyota picnic manual drive can go for 250k while the auto drive goes for 260k, there reasons for this price  variation of the same car
  A Toyota harrier can go for 340 to 360k while Toyota Hiace Bus (hummer bus)  go as high as 450k etc.
Freelander 1999-2001 goes 160k,
Avensis 1992-2001 goes 270k
Peogeout 607 goes for 285k
Peogeout 307 goes for 190k
1999 -2001 camry: 180k
1999 -2001 honda CRV: 265k
2002 -2003 honda CRV: 250k etc
1999-2001 Rav4 :235k
1992-2001 Nissan xtrail: 230K ( make enquiry for dashboard availability)

Rover 75 : 240K with clean console



The price of the dashboard has a lot to do with the conversion cost though not in exclusion with other parts like AC evaporator, steering rack, gear selector and door mat cover where needed.

Make sure the conversion is handled neatly and professionally. Contrary to some people belief, there is no much difference in terms of car performance between a normal drive (left) and one converted from right to left. If you go down the chasis of some cars, you notice that even when the car
may be a right drive, a provision has been made to use it as left drive also, it all depends on how the conversion was done.
If we can get the dashboard, we in Naija, can convert the car in such that it will be difficult to find out that it was formally a right drive. Trust me
