UK to cut student visas to Nigerians, others Agency reporter The number of non-European Union students coming into the United Kingdom for studies is to be cut by 25 per cent, a government minister has said. http://odili.net/news/source/2011/mar/24/809.html Europe correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria reports that British Home Secretary Theresa May, revealed the plan in a statement to the parliament on Wednesday in London. The statement said there would also be tougher English Language competence requirements, restrictions on dependants, curbs on post study work and new vetting for colleges. "Only the brightest and best should come to the UK. "The package will stop bogus students, studying meaningless courses at fake colleges. "It will protect our world-class institutions; stop the abuse that became all too common under Labour and it will restore some sanity to our student visa system,'' it added. According to the statement students studying in private institutions would be barred from working during term-time and only foreign students with a job offer would be able to stay in the UK after graduation. The statement said those already in the UK who had permission to stay because they applied to the colleges, would also be affected by the new policy. |

this is old news. anyway its part of the coalition governments plan to cut non-eu immigration to the UK to less than 100,000 per year within the next for years. so people brace yourselves for more immigration cuts |

"Only the brightest and best should come to the UK". Brain drain. When is Nigeria going to wake up? Do i not sense that our liberation can only come through a revolution? An arab style protest, (with guns and rockets), with the full support of the 'Coha-bitation' forces plus Nato and UN resolutions in order? whoops!!! The law isn't good enough. It should be brought down to 0%. Let's see who loses. Meanwhile as Naijan would say, one door closes, another open. Our young brains would divert to another country. Mid east or asia. Shame God save Nigeria!!! |
Re: Uk To Cut Student Visas To Nigerians, Others by snowdrops(m): 2:20pm On Mar 25, 2011 |
if not for our useless leaders why should we be leaving our dear country to a foreign land and endure all the challenges? people mainly travelled for business or pleasure before nigeria started backsliding. oh, those were the days |
Re: Uk To Cut Student Visas To Nigerians, Others by AjanleKoko: 2:41pm On Mar 25, 2011 |
aloy/emeka: If this is what they're quoting as the reason, it sounds rather dumb. How will cutting down on student visas protect their 'world-class' institutions? Are the institutions offering free tuition and board, or don't they have admission criteria? WRT the dig at 'bogus students'. Didn't they accredit these courses at these so-called 'fake colleges'? Or do the entry clearance officers not run checks on visa applications, to know which is to a bogus college and which is not? Sounds rather fishy. I doubt the minister actually said that. |

Re: Uk To Cut Student Visas To Nigerians, Others by snowdrops(m): 3:02pm On Mar 25, 2011 |
AjanleKoko:there is only a limited number of staff at the UKBA handling thousands of applications. they cannot possibly run checks on every application. only suspicious/incomplete ones seem to be investigated. the colleges are getting smarted at evading prosecution. and with 20% cut being made to Home Office budget, no wonder this blanket ban by the home secretary |
Re: Uk To Cut Student Visas To Nigerians, Others by AjanleKoko: 3:11pm On Mar 25, 2011 |
snowdrops: Maybe. But all the supposed references to 'bogus students' and 'fake colleges' kind of make the minister look silly. They should come up with a better reason. |

Re: Uk To Cut Student Visas To Nigerians, Others by snowdrops(m): 3:46pm On Mar 25, 2011 |

Re: Uk To Cut Student Visas To Nigerians, Others by snowdrops(m): 3:47pm On Mar 25, 2011 |
agoshofin:probably a reflection of the falling standards in nigerian universities. |

All these yarns na story. If u've gat your money to spend, dem go give u visa fast fast. Where else dem wan get money from? Dem get Naija Delta? Oyibo no be mumu oh. The issue be say majority of people wey dey enter UK no carry nothing for their wallet and will then rely on the lean resources available, |
Re: Uk To Cut Student Visas To Nigerians, Others by snowdrops(m): 4:02pm On Mar 25, 2011 |
of course they want your money. thats why they are clampong down on the students a good number of whom are at the bottom end of the social ladder |
Re: Uk To Cut Student Visas To Nigerians, Others by AjanleKoko: 4:21pm On Mar 25, 2011 |
snowdrops: Possibly in response to the larger British anti-immigration sentiment expressed during the elections. Influx of students into Britain is influx of funds into the UK. What about visa fees? Steady revenue. If she had said that the student visas were a source of illegal immigration, given the hoopla about terrorism these days, well, it would be tenable. But it's well within the power of the government to maintain a list of accredited UK schools and deny visas to students seeking admission to schools not on that list. Abi? |
Re: Uk To Cut Student Visas To Nigerians, Others by OWOLAYEMO: 4:23pm On Mar 25, 2011 |
They cant do it. UK is broke, they need our money. One foreign student is probably paying about GBP 5000 subsidizing over 10 indigenous students paying GDP800. While its important to moderate immigration, the allure of " foreigner's funds to feed their convalescing economy is too tempting. Don't worry, very soon, all their universities will soon send delegates and advisor down to the country for spring and summer admission. |
Re: Uk To Cut Student Visas To Nigerians, Others by snowdrops(m): 4:35pm On Mar 25, 2011 |
AjanleKoko:but thats the point i made in an earlier post which you seemed to disagree with AjanleKoko:thats possibly why they did not make further cuts than these. with 80% cuts in university funding, they upped tuition fees to £9000 probably to cushion the impact of fall in revenue from oversea students AjanleKoko: illegal in the sense that some students dont come here to study but exclusively to earn a living and bring their extended family with them. also the colleges may have had genuine accreditation, but they instead focus on exploiting non-eu economic migrants by bringing them into uk under the pretext of coming to uk to study. some even know nothing about their course or colleges when questioned by immigration at the airport. |
