Fela On Buhari - Beasts Of No Nation by Beaf: 1:14am On Apr 01, 2011
Beasts Of No Nation

Beasts of No Nation: Beast of No Nation is the first song Fela wrote in 1986, after he was liberated from prison—serving two years from a five year prison sentence for trumped-up foreign currency violation charges. Everywhere he went after his release, people were asking him what he was going to sing about: ‘Fela wetin you go sing about? Them go worry me!”. People wanted to hear him sing about his prison experience, like he had done with the songs like: Alagbon Close, Kalakuta Show, and Expensive poo. Finally, he decided to sing about the world we live in—with particular reference to Nigeria. He said when he was in prison he called it ‘Inside World’, out of prison he called it ‘Outside World’. But for him it is actually ‘Craze World’.

Otherwise, what name can one give a world with: police brutality, army oppression, courts without justice, magistrates who are supposed to uphold the law, obviously seen bending the law to please some special interest. As further proof of the craze world, he sings about the judge who sent him to jail for five years on a trumped up charge, only for the same judge to visit Fela in a prison hospital two years after. The judge apologized, claiming he was under pressure from the government to convict. This could only happen in a Craze World, Fela reasons.

It can only be in a craze world that people sit and watch governments shoot down protesting students with impunity, like in Soweto(South Africa), Zaria and Ife(Nigeria). Bearing in mind that Nigeria like all craze world countries, condemn the apartheid regime in South Africa, yet committing crimes against humanity in their respective countries. Turning to another aspect of craze world policy of the Nigerian government. In 1983, the Buhari/Idigabon military regime launched a public campaign dubbed ‘War Against Indiscipline’. This was the regime’s solution to corruption inherent in the Nigerian society. To justify this campaign, the Nigerian head of state, General Buhari and his deputy General Idiagbon publicly used words like: ‘…my people are useless! My people are senseless! My people are indisciplined!’ to describe Nigerian People.

For Fela, only in a craze world can such remarks be made. Moreover, such statements could only have come from an ‘animal in human skin’. How could these two animals use such words to qualify a people who feed them? This being so, other leaders from other countries must either be animals themselves to associate with, or accept to co-habit under such an umbrella as the United Nations with a head of state that considers his people useless.

Turning to the United Nations, Fela saw it as a majorly unhealthy organization that suffers major inadequacy in its organizational principles. It is absurd to organize the UN principle bodies; the Security Council and the General Assembly, in such an undemocratic manner as one member’s cote can veto the decision of the majority. Is this Democracy? “What is United about the UN?” Fela asked. Thatcher went to war with Argentina over Falkland—yet both counties are members of the world body. Reagan and Libya were at war. Israel versus Lebanon. Iran versus Iraq. East-West cold war. It looks more like a group of disunited nations, so how can such a body work to promote and encourage respect for human rights? For Fela, that is another kind of animal talk. How can people talk about ‘individual’ rights? No one has the right to deprive someone else of what belongs to the individual—only an animal would try to take away another person’s legitimate rights. People who hear Fela say things like this reminded him that he was sent to prison for having such opinions of government. He, in his defense, said it was not him who called members of the UN animals. It was Pik Botha, the former South Africa President at the peak of the anti-apartheid struggle, in reaction to the persistent riots against the racist regime. He came out with a statement that his regime would act more brutally if the riots did not stop: “…this uprising will bring out the beast in us”. Fela’s reminded us that President Reagan advocated: “, constructive engagement with the apartheid regime” among member nations of the UN. The same policy as Mrs. Thatcher – an indication that they were sharing the same friendship and animal characteristics as Botha. If this is so the UN can only be an assembly of Beasts of No Nation.

Fela Anikulakpo (Buhari's victim)

The man was commenting on the politics and horrors of the days. His words are raw and real; they paint the bestial nature of Buhari's tyrannical regime in stark colours.

Isnt it funny how Idiagbons picture is much bigger than Buhari's in the article picture?
Its an apt illustration of how Buhari was just floating in ineptitude, simply happy for the pecks of head of state, while his deputy was his boss. embarassed cry

@ezeuche, who tell you south west is supporting that satanic buhari? We will never forget how he hounded our leaders in jail while keeping northern leaders in hotels under the guise of house arrest. We all know how he seized the Passport of AWOLOWO for over two years and prevented him from seeking medical attention, we know how Bola Ige, Ajasin, Ebenezer BabaTope and Jakande were jailed on trumped up charges that were never real, we know how he placed soldiers to restrict the movement of AWOLOWO in OGUN state. Mark my word buhari will not win a single councillor election in south west not to even talk of a house of assembly. Ribadu all the way in south west.

Thank you! Seems like the enemy of my enemy is my friend. We in the South-East have not forgotten what he did to Alex Ekwueme. While Buhari's fellow Fulani, Shagari was placed under "house arrest" in a comfortable mansion, Buhari imprisoned Ekwueme in a maximum security prison reserved for dangerous criminals. Don't you see the hypocrisy of this man. I am glad some people in the SW are not swayed by Buhari's supposed stance on "corruption."

Another tireless social crusader of the time, Tai Solarin (RIP) was jailed by Buhari for simply asking when there would be an elected government. Despite the fact that it was well known that Tai Solarin suffered serious asthma, Buhari refused to allow him drugs, hoping he would die. Nigerians of all hues amnd complexions begged and looked on in horror, but Buhari wasn't moved. Somehow, God smiled on the man from Ikenne and he lived through the ordeal.

Another political chieftain of the time Ebenezer Babtope was jailed for no reason as usual. While in detention without charge, his father died; despite the loud volume of remonstrations to his person, Buhari refused to allow the innocent Babatope to attend the burial of his father (even under armed gurad).

Beast of No Nation, is an apt description.

Bringing fela into the equation where minnows are concerned is a hit below d waist. Fele is just too big than any of these clowns clamouring for our vote. Even in death d west Rose him from death with his stage play, none of these clowns can step into his shoes and when they die the world would not remember them let alone Nigeria remembering them.

Buhuri at least would bring some of d fear, d respect for authority, Jonothan on d other hand belong to d generation where nothing would be done yet millions of dollars would have been signed for a phantom projects that explains why there is nothing to show in Bayelsa state after Jonathans's vociferous appetite to embezzle and siphon state fund. @ Fhemmmy, to be very frank with you, I appreciate your person and I know you to be an illustrous Nigerian.

Step back for one minute and think about it. Buhari is 69 years old and has served as a military ruler of this nation already. He reminds us of the bitter past. Daily, as we dig up these facts from our history, it leaves a bad taste in our mouths. Every credible Nigerian who lived (and was aware enough) in the time of Buhari knows that he is not cut for a job as this. It is widely accepted that he tried to instill discipline but it is also clear that he has no handle of modern day governance. He has also lost touch with what is left of the 80's.

Let me use an analogy you may like.

Peugeot 504 was Nigeria's most reliable car in the 80's. Fact. But does the same apply today? Should we because of the imperfections of Toyota Camry go back to 504? NO WAY! The 504 has a manual transmission gear system, no airbags, no navigation system, no power steering. You know the rest. If you drive a Toyota Camry the way you drive a 504, you will veer off the road. It takes a new mindset to steer the nation in the way it should go. Our democracy is too tender to be left in the hands of a man like Buhari.

During his regime he introduced austere policies that worked against the common man. The koboko was his constutution. Health, Education and the economy were in shambles. In order to frustrate some citizens, he banned the importation of certain essential goods and at the same time did not provide alternatives. You know where I am going  wink Check the history records.

This is from BBC website: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-12890807

However, his attempts to rebalance public finances by curbing imports led to the closure of businesses and many job losses. Prices rose, while living standards fell, leading to a palace coup by Gen Ibrahim Babangida on 27 August 1985. Mr Buhari was imprisoned for 40 months.

My brother, there is a parable that says: You cannot teach an old dog new tricks. Surely, nobody is a dog, but the essence of the parable is to show that human nature is difficult to change. It gets even more difficult with age. Why do you think many of our grand parents cannot leave their chewing stick? For any reason you have to vote for him, you will find more in other candidates if you look carefully.

Blast From The Past

Excerpt from the book: A history of Nigeria by Di Toyin Falola,Matthew M. Heaton

Babangida brought some of Buhari’s harshest critics into his government, including Olikoye Ransome-Kuti (Brother of Fela Kuti), a medical doctor who had led a strike by public health employees protesting the decline of public health services under Buhari. Babangida also opened an investigation into human rights abuses perpetrated by the Buhari regime, and reduced or overturned the jail sentences of many of those prosecuted for corruption and other offences under Buhari. He repealed the decree that has strangled the press during Buhari’s administration, and released several journalists from detention. To address the image perpetrated by Buhari that the military did not care about the opinions of the general public, Babangida encourages public debate on issues pertaining to the governance of Nigeria. The press was encouraged to report on all sides of these issues and to print public responses and opinions.
