Garba Shehu: Akeredolu Cannot Unilaterally Oust Herders In Ondo State by MASTAkiLLAh(m): 9:32pm On Jan 19, 2021
The presidency on Tuesday noted that as a lawyer, Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, in tackling insecurity is not expected to unilaterally oust Fulani herders in the state or he will go against the constitution of the country.

This followed an ultimatum issued by the government for them to vacate government reserves over security concerns.

According to a statement by Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant to the President (Media & Publicity) in Abuja, the presidency maintained that asking the herders to leave can set off a chain of events, which the constitution anticipated and tries to guard against.

It, therefore, called for caution on both sides.

The statement read: “The Presidency has been keenly monitoring events occurring in Ondo State and the ‘orders’ by the government of the state, ‘asking herders to vacate the forests in seven days.’

“What is clearly emerging, is a lack of consistency in messaging which in turn leads to various contradictions regarding the accuracy and the intent behind the message.

“There is little to be said other than to call for restraint on both sides and urge the state government and the leadership of the Fulani communities to continue their dialogue for a good understanding that will bring to an urgent end, the nightmarish security challenges facing the state.

“Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, a seasoned lawyer, Senior Advocate of Nigeria and indeed, a former president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has fought crime in his state with passion and commitment, greater sensitivity and compassion for the four years he has run its affairs and, in our view, will be the least expected to unilaterally oust thousands of herders who have lived all their lives in the state on account of the infiltration of the forests by criminals.

“If this were to be the case, rights groups will be right in expressing worries that the action could set off a chain of events which the makers of our constitution foresaw and tried to guard against.

“We want to make it clear that kidnapping, banditry and rustling are crimes, no matter the motive or who is involved. But, to define crime from the nameplates, as a number of commentators have erroneously done- which group they belong to, the language they speak, their geographical location or their faith is atavistic and cruel.

“We need to delink terrorism and crimes from ethnicity, geographical origins and religion—to isolate the criminals who use this interchange of arguments to hinder law enforcement efforts as the only way to deal effectively with them.

“The president, who swore to defend the constitution has spoken against the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in asking citizens of Northern origin to leave; he did not spare the group based in Sokoto, ‘Muslim Solidarity Forum,’ which asked the Bishop of Sokoto to leave and is prepared to do all that the law permits to protect citizens all over the country in their choice of where they wished to reside and are treated as equal citizens.

“The government of Ondo and all the 35 others across the federation must draw clear lines between the criminals and the law-abiding citizens who must equally be saved from the infiltrators. Beyond law and order, the fight against crime is also a fight for human values which are fundamental to our country.”

Stupid people. You simply can't delink terrorism from specific groups simply because you wish it so. Facts born of data are stubborn things. And available data suggests vast majority of the people who commits these cruel crimes are from specific groups.
The fulani as a tribe has a bad brand factually associated with kidnappings, rape, theft, land grab and genocide. You shouldn't be surprised that sane leaders down south want them out.

Who owns Yoruba land? Is it the presidency or the Yoruba people?

The governor is the chief executive officer of his state and can decide the best way to provide security for his state. All the governor need to do right now is ban open grazing and arrest any Fulani and his cows who flaunts the law and place heavy fine on him that he cannot be able to pay for it.

South must stand up and fight these jihadist

Which of the presidency is this ? Is it garba shehu faction or femi adesina?

MODIFIED
Garba isn’t concerned about the crimes of these herders but rather the ethnic coloration given, that’s rather insensitive. Herdsmen have been on rampage for 5yrs their ethnicity is not a secret.
But the generalization is a bit unfair not all herders are criminals.

He has no power whatsoever to stop the herders from going on with their grazing business not to talk of sending them packing...who the Bleep is he? These herders are Nigerians and must be allowed to do whatever they want in as much as they ain't going against the law......they deserve to be free too...enough of the stigmatization already

Akeredolu is within his jurisdiction, he is senior advocate of Nigeria, he knows what he is doing and he can't be bullied by presidency. He asked all the herdsmen living in the forest to leave, why will a stranger be living in the forest?
Herdsmen case should be case of state of emergency. The whole scenario will change 2023, because another region will be in government.

As for IPOB you are mentioning, you can only speak, there is nothing you can do. If you do anyhow you will see anyhow. The game has changed, everyone knows that the game is up for the fulani, even in hausaland, I mean the entire northern region are waiting to take their pound of flesh from the fulanis. Your cup is full to the brim, I can assure you. I wish our yoruba brothers, middle belters, hausas and all the northern minorities will be as decisive as IPOB and deal with the savage, blood thirsty and murderous fulani terrorists from the sahel. mtcheew

Garba must be mad! If the Fulani living in the forest can't point out the bad blood among them, let them follow their brothers back to the North.

I don't even hate Fulani but enough is enough ewa ma loleyi, we have tried to be reasonable enough

See the way this garbage is talking. Herdsmen are killing people and you're saying the governor should not take action.
It's not your fault, I blame tinubu that went to bring an incompetent buhari to be ruling over sane people.
Well, the country has failed already, and the only option is restructuring or disintegration, but I know it will not happen because all our politicians are benefiting from the failed united Nigeria.
