CSO knocks Wike as Rivers gov donates N500m to Sokoto fire victims


The Rivers State Civil Society Organisation has criticised Governor Nyesom Wike over his N500m pledge to affected traders and rebuild the Sokoto Central Market, which was gutted by fire.

The state Chairman of the group, Enefaa Georgewill, said though there was nothing wrong for anyone to commiserate with victims of disasters, but there were a lot of pressing issues begging for attention in Rivers State.

The River State Government pledged the sum of N500m to support its Sokoto State counterpart in rebuilding the market, just as Governor Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi State donated N30m to the victims of the inferno.

Part of the N500m, according to Wike, who visited Sokoto on Wednesday, is meant to support the victims of the disaster.

Affirming that whatever affects Sokoto also concerns Rivers State, Wike said, “My administration will do all it takes to ensure that the affected market is reconstructed and becomes functional.

“A situation where the means of livelihood of the people of Sokoto State, the drive of the government to improve the people’s lives and a broad spectrum of socio-economic wellbeing of many people will be affected does not augur well for development and progress.”

Earlier in his remarks, while conducting Wike and his entourage round the market, Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, explained that the market had 16,000 shops out of which about 60 per cent were affected by the inferno.


He said when the fire broke out, the entire state government apparatus and some Federal Government agencies were mobilised to bring it under control.

Georgewill, however, stated, “We see it (pledge) as pure act of wickedness for the governor to have ignored a lot of salient and pertinent issues in the state and pledged such huge amount of money to citizens of another state.

“It is more like the proverbial refusal to remove the log in your eyes but instead attempt to remove the speck in somebody else’s eyes.

“We have the case of the Orashi region that has been ravaged by flood. Governor Wike did not make any response and there is no well-coordinated distribution of relief materials to the people.

“We are in a state where pensioners and retirees are complaining that they have not been paid their gratuities since he assumed office as the governor of Rivers State, and he is going to donate N500m to citizens in another state.”

The CSO leader added, “We are talking about a state where since the inception of this government, we have not witnessed bursary paid to Rivers students, which is the culture and tradition that previous governments had followed.

“We are talking about a state where even the minimum wage has yet to be fully implemented, because workers are still grumbling. A whole lot of issues need to be attended to.

“As far as we are concerned, what the governor has done by that pledge or donation is mere eye service and unnecessary politicking.”

Normally, Southern leaders are very stupid.

Wike is one of the working Governors but he acts dumb sometimes.

For what reason did he donate money to a fellow Governor? That money I am very sure will be embezzled by Tambuwal and his cronies.

Wike is now forming Federal Government by paying bail out fund or is it allocation to Sokoto with Rivers money.

That was a misplaced priority and unthoughtfulness attitude from Wike

Southern leaders can never be wise. Kebbi gave 30m and Rivers gave almost 18 times as much as if all the problems in his state have been solved. Big head but empty.

There must be a new federal legislation to guard against state and federal executives running amok with state finances in this way! If he's not buying Prado jeeps for already rich federal legislators from his state, he's announcing hundreds of millions naira bounties on some people's head! That's wrong. It's not his private money! Where these funds budgeted? How were they appropriated? Are you sure he knows the difference between private purse and public purse? In a state that can't pay pensioners?! There must be a legislation that should forbid this sort of wrecklesness, while requiring states to furnish the EFCC with every single expenditure made from the state purse every month! Let's start from there...

You do have a very good point. But something has to be done. It's getting scarry! As far as I'm concerned, there's no fight against corruption, if cheif executives both at the state and federal levels can whimsically dip their gorry hands into the collective purse and spend like rampaging vagabonds. Actually, this is not done elsewhere and is one of those atrocious legacies we inherited from the military days. If a governor is itching to donate money to a cause, he should do so from his own personal finances! Not from the people's money. This idea of a governor or a president becoming a "Chief launcher" perse in an event started during the Babangida regime, when he was trying to compete with the Abiolas, the Iwuanyanwus and the Dantatas on who will outdo the other during different occasions to launch one project or the other.

It started with relative good intentions but now the likes of Wike and others have turned the whole thing into a corrupt exercise for looting and mismanagement of states finances. Irrespective of what states legislations say on this, if a president is serious about fighting corruption, a superior legislation to make it a crime that can lead to immediate impeachment, if governors/commissioners/ministers /presidents spend government money this way should have been promulgated. A bored governor will wake up one morning and decide to buy Prado jeeps for all traditional rulers in his state because they're good at singing his praise! What kind of anyhow administration is that? Wasting billions so carelessly in a state where many primary school students still take their classes under some mango trees..
