How Do I Overcome Sin Completely by DGreatMan(m): 10:29am On Apr 04, 2011
I want to be a child of God but it seems very impossible for me to be born again cuz every time I repent, I always find myself in sin again. I wonder if God hasn't written me off cuz I can't even count the number of times I've prayed for forgivness and I still find myself doing it and I no longer have that boldness to even think of repenting talkless of praying to Him for forgiveness again.

Please, I want anyone who is really leaving this christian life to tell me the way forward b4 it's too late for me.

Thanks.

You cannot overcome sin completely and you're not even required to. It is like asking people to advice you how to completely avoid lectures, tests and examinations in school. Sins exist to make us all evolve via the tests and lessons sins put us through. That is why we are here in this world. To be tested and learn from these tests. So, forget trying to overcome sin. What we call sins are essential tools of spiritual evolution.

It's not true. if it isn't possible Jesus wouldn't have asked us to be holy and perfect even as God is perfect.

I want to know how.

Well, it is an eventual goal to achieve "perfection" because we still find ourselves in the spiritual evolution flux. That is what , i think, was being referred to. The final goal that we are all moving towards. But my point is, you will not achieve it now, in this lifetime. And we are not expected to. The most important thing for you to do now, is to keep learning and keep evolving towards perfection and love. You can't do more than that. As long as you are moving in the right direction, you are okay.

Sins help move you in the right direction, if you are willing to learn, that is. This is how it works;
1) You find yourself faced with a situation in which you have to make a decision.

2) You make the decision and the decision might be the right one or the wrong one. But, in any case, you do make the decision and you consequently take action based on that decision.

3) Then you get faced with the consequences of the action you took which might be positive one or a negative one and you have to go through the resulting consequences brought about by the decision you made.

4) It is during this confrontation of yours with these consequences that you learn a lot of new things about yourself and life that move your soul up the evolutionary ladder a notch, as long as you take the lessons onboard.
For example, you are a married man and you are faced with a temptation of adultery with a stunningly beautiful single lady. If your decision is to get involved with this woman(which is negative), then you will definitely get the consequences of your decision further down the road(you got caught and your family is about to collapse as your wife seeks for divorce, for ex.) and you will have to deal with it.
Now, if you manage to save your marriage, would you make the same decision again if you are confronted with the same situation(adultery temptation) again? Of course you won't, because you don't want to have to go through the whole consequences yet again and risk breaking your marriage.
You see? You have learnt your lesson and that has moved you up the evolutionary ladder and you are now better prepared to face the next decisionmaking situation. That is life and it is perpetual till the day we depart this world.

Anybody who tells you that you can bypass the gradual evolving process to achieve perfection is deceiving you. It is not possible. You cannot overcome sin, but you can work with it to improve yourself spiritually, mentally and intellectually, which is the whole idea of this experience that we are having on this earth.

You are already a child of God. We're all children of God. All of us. If you were not a child of God, you wouldn't be here to begin with. God puts nobody off.

The question i want to ask you is that, do you keep doing the same negative thing? I mean, do you keep on committing the same sin?

@ poster,
You can never overcome sin while living in the flesh , that is, living according to the dictate of your flesh. There are two lives, life in the flesh and life in the spirit. The BIBLE declared that those that live according to the flesh can never please GOD while those that live in the Spirit are those that live victorious life( living above sin).
So the only way you can overcome sin is to surrender your life to Christ and be born of the Spirit. Therefore,, if any man is in Christ, he is a new Creation: old things have passed away, behold, all things have become new( 2 cor, 5:17).
Re: How Do I Overcome Sin Completely by justcool(m): 6:51pm On Apr 04, 2011
@DGreatMan
First, I commend you for wanting to avoid sin completely; that's very commendable and really shows that your repentance is genuine.

It is my perception that one can avoid sin completely; remember the biblical saying, "Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect."(Mathew 5:48) And "For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven."(Mathew 5:20)

But you cannot become perfect overnight; like everything, it takes time, commitment, determination, and focus. Therefore do not complain or lament when sometimes you make a mistake; just learn from the mistake, pray about it and go on with your life. It is better to make mistakes with good volition than to give up because of mistakes. Try to learn from these mistakes, for they show you what and where you need to improve. It is part of growing process; no child learns to walk without stumbling and falling many times, but these falls do not deter the child, he gets up after each fall and tries again.

Also, let love well up in your heart for every humanbieng that you meet; Love is the strongest protection from hurting or maltreating people.

About sins involving sexual intercourse, I will share an insight with you. AVOID THE OPPUTUNITY. This is a very strong advice; avoid every opportunity that can lead to a sinful sexual intercourse. For example, a man should avoid the opportunity to be alone with a woman that he is not married to.  No matter how strong you think you are, when the opportunity presents itself, you may yield, especially in the case of sexual intercourse.

If you are friends with members of the opposite sex, meet them in public places – schools, churches, restaurants, and etc, -- never invite her to your room where you will be alone with her. Even if both of you are born again Christians, avoid being alone and isolated with her. If you two want to meet for bible studies and etc., always do the meeting in a public place, otherwise the Bible study may give way to something else.

Advice your friends of the opposite sex to dress appropriately, but be very careful so that you don’t hurt their feelings. A good strategy is to always complement them when they are wearing something appropriate, like long skirts and flowing gowns. This will encourage them to wear such dresses often around you. Never complement them when they are wearing very revealing cloths.

Most importantly, always pray to God for strength.

I wish you strength and may God bless.

Just embrace the love of God upon your life
Love yourself in the light of God's word
And learn to love others as you love yourself
Just walk in love

"And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying Abba Father" -- Galatians 4:6 The Evidence Bible.

I will be using the analogy of a toddler and a hot heater to put your situation into proper perspective as I understand it.

A two year old boy was once staring at a heater, fascinated by its bright orange glow.  His father saw him and warned, "Don't touch that heater, son.  It may look pretty but it's hot."  The little boy believed him, and moved away from the heater.

Some time later, after his father had left the room, the boy thought to himself, "I wonder if it really is hot."  He then reached out to touch it and see for himself.  The second his flesh burned, he stopped believing it was hot, he now knew it was hot!  He had now moved out of the realm of belief into the realm of experience.

Many of us who are now Christians today used to believe in God's existence before we got converted.  But when we obeyed the Word of God, turned from our sins, and embraced Jesus Christ, we stopped merely believing.  The moment we reach out and touch the heater bar of God's mercy, we move out of belief and then move into the realm of experience.  This experience is so radical, Jesus referred to it as being "born again."

It takes more than merely believing in a parachute we have to trust it by putting it on if we are to fly from thousands of feet in the air and expect to land safely.  The Bible says that those who don't know God are spiritually dead (Eph. 2:1; 4:18).  We are born with physical life, but not spiritual life.  A transition is made from death to life the moment you repent and place your faith in Christ to receive His very life.  You trust Him the way you will trust a parachute by putting Him on.  You will then pass from spiritual death to life and become a brand new Creature (2 Cor. 5:17).

Those who now have God's Spirit living in them will love what He loves and desire to do His will; they will have a hunger for His Word, a love for other believers and a burden for the lost.  The Holy Spirit also confirms in their spirit that they are now children of God (Romans 8:16).  Those who believe on the name of the Son of God can know that they have eternal life (1 John 5:12,13).

Suppose two people, that is, a heater manufacturer and a skin specialist, walked into the room just after that child had burned his hand on the heater.  Both assured the boy that he couldn't possibly have burned as I can see some posters here encouraging you to believe.  But all the experts, theories and arguments in the world will not dissuade that boy, because of his experience.

Therefore, those who have been transformed by God's power need never fear scientific or other arguments, because the man with an experience is not at the mercy of a man with an argument.

"For our gospel came not to you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Spirit, and in much assurance . . ." -- 1 Thess. 1:5

Once you have moved from the realm of belief to the realm of experience you can let me know so that I can give some practical tips to overcoming the sin that easily beset us.

DGreatMan:

Thank you OLAADEGBU. I really appreciate. I'll like to hear more from you on how to overcome consistently.

You are welcome, anytime.

Addictions, whatever they are, are formed by habits and habits by practise (i.e. por.nography or m.a.sturbation).  To overcome them we should start by having fellowship with the Lord by reading His word, praying and fellowshipping with people of like precious faith, also by sharing your faith with your friends.  Occupy your time by reading, studying the word of God, the devil makes use of idle periods that are not fruitful.  Read  Ephesians 6:10-18

Try out the following tips to break such addictions.
[li]Would you ever try to do it in church during worship?  This question puts it in a proper perspective, God is not only present during worship services in church, He is just as present in your bedroom when you are alone.[/li]

[li]Examine yourself to ensure that Christ is living in you (2 Corinthian 13:5).  Also read Romans 6:11-22; 8:1-14; Ephesians 5:3-8.[/li]

[li]Grasp the serious nature of your sin.  Jesus said that it would be better for you to be blind and go to heaven, than for your eye to cause you to sin and end up in hell (Matt. 5:29).[/li]

[li]Those who profess to be Christians yet give themselves to certain besetting sins evidently lack the fear of God (Prov.16:6).  Cultivate the fear of God by reading Proverbs 2:1-5.[/li]

[li]Read Psalm 51 and make it your own prayer.[/li]

[li]Memorise James 1:14,15 and 1 Corinthians 10:13.  Follow the example of Jesus in Matthew 4:3-11 and quote the Word of God when you are tempted (again see Ephesians 6:12-20).[/li]

[li]Make no provision for your flesh (Romans 13:14; 1 Peter 2:11).  Get rid of every access to materials that elicits lust, such as logging on to the sexuality or romance section on NL, pornographic materials, videos or movies.  Stop feeding the fire.[/li]

[li]Guard your heart with all diligence (Prov. 4:23).  Don't let the demonic realm have access to your thought life.  If you give yourself to it, you will become its slave (Rom. 6:16).  Read the Bible on a daily basis without skipping it.  As you submit yourself to God, the devil will flee (James 4:7,cool.[/li]

[li]The next time temptation comes, do fifty press-ups, then fifty sit-ups.  If you are still burning after this, repeat the exercise all over again (1 Cor. 9:27).[/li]
What do you mean by repenting? . It's important to know if you at anytime gave your heart to christ by receiving eternal life. It's possible to be repenting religiously from sin. But that doesn't give a man ability over sin. The first step is to recieve Jesus into your heart . If you haven't done this , then it is one major reason can't overcome sin. But if you have received the gift of eternal life. You have overcome Sin. All you need is to recieve the holy spirit and fellowship with the word of God. Sin is a transaction in the flesh. As you walk in the spirit , the appetite for th flesh dies.

Galatians 5:16
16 [This] I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

Dead Weight.

What are some of the weights that can hinder us in our Christian walk?  I've listed some in the cartoon: worries, grudges, guilt, shame, distractions.  These are some of the things we need to free ourselves from in order to do God's will more effectively. (Joyful 'toon).

Simply

Accept the death, burial and resurrection as true(believe)
Rest in the obedience(attentiveness) of Christ Jesus as you are no more in Adam (disobedience).
Hold your ground even though u see sin by proclaim you are the Righteousness of God in Christ.
and spend time in worship of God in Christ.
Re: How Do I Overcome Sin Completely by Amujale(m): 6:34pm On Apr 10, 2011
Hmm! this is a slipery slope. A loaded question imho; for me, one cannot overcome wrong doing as one cannot overcome ones own self. They say "wrong-doing" and "doing what is right" are both natural phenomena that are constantly chasing mankind forever more. That which cannot be contested is the Glory of the Almighty. So, trying to overcome wrong-doing or wrong-doers is in my opinion a perfect waste of valuable time.

Ask yourself this, do you know when an act is considered to be "right" or "wrong"? If you do,  then put it into practise and lend your thoughts to your peers; thats pretty much all you need to navigate this place we call mother Earth.  If you dont, then seek counseling from those who claim they do. Master the essence of these two great companions (and yet unconnected in value) and you've cracked it.
Re: How Do I Overcome Sin Completely by papajim: 9:48am On Jun 07, 2011
Hello DGreatMan,
It is the Holy Ghost in you that you would  even ask such a question, so be encourged.
The fact that you want God in your life is proof that He hasn't written you off.

God has provided a way for you to overcome all sin if you really want it, but you must want it with all of your heart.
If this is want you want with all of your heart then ask yourself this question. Is this world my home or is the world to come my home?
Do you want the things of this world or the things of the world to come. Where you treasures is there your heart will be also.
Only you can answer this question.
If your answer is you want the world to come then you will have to make a decsion. Are you willing to cut this world loose, are you willing to let it go,
are you willing to say you don't want it anymore? If you can say yes to this and mean it with all of your heart you have taken the first step.
Live for the world to come and let Jesus become you life!!
You  cannot serve two gods.
Rightesousness comes by faith, saying yes to Jesus and no to the world will help you tremendously. It will be your first step of faith, even though you don't have the power within yourself to overcome the world you still need to make this decision daily.
By letting go of this world you will also be letting go of your selfisnness which is the foundation for sin, because the things you have strived for in the past you no longer will want to be a part of.
The second step is Pray without ceasing. Be in constant fellowship with God. Enoch walked with God and was not. Walking with God gives us the strength to overcome the world. Talking to God increases our relationshop with Him. Our relationship with God closes the seperation. Sin is seperation from God, which is announced by the law. Through the law comes the knowledge of sin. In other words the law tells us that the seperation has taken place. Jesus in His life here was in constant prayer constant communion with His heavenly Father. Prayer keeps us focused on God.
The third step is study the word of God to find out who He is and what He wants for you and what He has done  for your salvation through His son Jesus Christ.
Jesus died to cleanse us from all unrightiousness, cleanse means to seperate us from it completely we recieve that cleansing through faith which works by love.
Love brings us back to relationship which closes the seperation gap. Bye the way cleansing is what real forgiveness is, to seperate us from sin.

There is so much more if you are willing to learn the simplicity of the gospel and what it really is for us.
I hope this helps you in your endevour to overcome.
