The Minister of Agriculture, Alhaji Mohammed Sabo Nanono, has disclosed that the collapse of 145 textiles companies has led to increase in crimes in Kaduna, Lagos, Onitsha and other places.

He made the disclosure in Lafia, Nasarawa State, when he paid a courtesy call on Governor Abdullahi Sule.

Car dealers take over Kaduna’s moribund textile companies
14 years after concession, a glimmer of hope for Kano dry port
“The collapse of 145 textiles companies across the country, especially in Kaduna, Lagos and Onitsha and the reduced demand for cotton has led to crimes.

Textile was the largest employer of labour in the country before the collapse of the sector, which led to layoffs and closure of textile companies. Poverty and hardship that came out of it led to increase in crimes,’’ he said.

The minister said Nigeria had to embrace agricultural mechanisation to be able to feed her people.

He said Nigerians had to live together in peace to make the country vibrant, as ranching is on top gear for the millions of livestock in the country, ranging from cattle, goats, pigs, camels, among others.

In his speech, Governor Sule noted that the state was happy with the minister’s contributions to the sector and for carrying the state along.

He assured that the state would embrace agricultural mechanisation to increase production.

Let Nigeria be buying guns Instead of fixing it's economy.

Violent crimes is here to stay in Nigeria if we don't change course.

Worst is that we have no one piloting the nation's affair now.

Just cabal blocs.

It will only get worse no matter what if there is no solid economic overhaul.

Minister is kind of right

Dependency on oil means more importation which means that local textile industries can't compete with imported anf smuggled textiles which means the local textile industries collapse

Which means many cotton farmers go out of business which means more idle hands

Which means more conflict.

Oil is a curse

The Honourable Minister need to inform the public...
How Mangal and the Northern elites....
destroyed the textile industry in the North...

From his base in Katsina, Mangal arranges the import of food, fuel and anything his wealthy Nigerian clients might desire. But the staple of his operation is the textiles that have helped kill off the local industry. The details of the alleged smuggling operation are drawn from interviews with northern Nigeria politicians, officials, businessmen and textiles consultants in Abuja, Katsina, Kano and Kaduna between 2009 and 2013. Mangal is said to charge a flat fee of N2m (about $13,000) per cargo, plus the cost of goods. In 2008 Mangal was estimated to be bringing about 100 40ft shipping containers across the frontier each month

cool

This ones are dumb

If I ever became a President, or a Governor... Aptitude test would be conducted for my political appointees, and their C.V would be vetted by the best H.R companies

Politicians who donated to my campaign and needs appointments but are not qualified would rather get compensated with Contracts and Government patronage of their business

Truth be told Nigerian population in 1960 was 45 million. Now 200 million.

People were mostly rural and farmed all kinds of crops. Rice, cocoa, rubber, ground nuts, yam, oil palm, cotton, sorghum, maize, beans, sugar cane, cassava, etc. Most are now educated to secondary level, more live in cities, believe they deserve all the modern things of life in the city.
Farming has not been encouraged or made attractive to young people.

Cocoa, cashew and fruit trees can still create lots of employment.

For some time now they have been looking for excuse to use state resources at federal level to develop their region. If the textile industries are down then whose fault is it? There are rubber industries that are down in the ND and Cocoa industries too that are down across the south. This rankadede mentality is what has brought us where we are. Always looking to steal from one region to another.

no. He is saying the joblessness of those ex textile workers led them into crime as a result of not being able to find employment elsewhere. Lame excuse though. Textile companies have been collapsing in the the last 25 years
