AKHA DEPUTY SPEAKER SUES FOR PEACE BETWEEN OKOBO WARRING COMMUNITIES

The Deputy Speaker and Member representing Okobo State Constituency in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Princess Felicia Bassey, has called for an immediate ceasefire between Okopedi and Amamong, two neighbouring communities in Okobo Local government Area.
The Deputy Speaker made the appeal earlier today while on inspection and reconciliation visit to the two communities that were reported to be at daggers drawn with one another, reminding them that they are but brothers and sisters in spite of whatever insignificant physical boundaries may be seen to exist between them.
Earlier in the week, the neighbouring villages of Amamong and Okopedi, both in Okobo Local Government Area were reported to have engaged each other in a communal clash that resulted in the loss of lives, destruction of property, burning of houses that has resulted in leaving many homeless and inflicted serious injuries to many.
Meeting with chieftains and youth of both villages after having gone round to see some burnt buildings, the Deputy Speaker expressed disappointment over the incident and stressed that no problem could have been so big to the extent of the two sister communities engaging in such mindless violence against one another.
“Let me say that I am shocked by the extent of arson and related destruction caused. Whatever may have been the cause of provocation or whoever may have initiated it, I am greatly disappointed that brothers and sisters can commit this nature of crime against themselves, without a second thought or pricking of conscience. I can only wish that this should be the first and last to be orchestrated to the shame of the people”, she stated
.
Princess Bassey further disclosed that she had to step in immediately on hearing about the dastardly incident in order to caution the perpetrators and mitigate further hostilities that could result worse damages. She reminded the stakeholders and youths in the communities of the consequences of taking laws into one’s hand for any kind of provocation that could easily be resolved amicably if they had consulted with appropriate authorities.
She therefore advised them to key into the peaceful atmosphere that the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Mr. Udom Gabriel Emmanuel, has created for peaceful coexistence, growth and development in the State. “Akwa State is a very peaceful State courtesy of Governor Udom Emmanuel. As such, this wicked drama that you people have staged is a clear deviation from what identifies Akwa Ibom people globally. It must stop now”.
Responding to the Deputy Speaker’s admonition and plea, one of the youth leaders who did not want his name in print said they were pleased by the quick interest and intervention shown by her and will abide accordingly by her shots of advice. He said that the Deputy Speaker has truly proven to be a conscious representative and leader who wants the best for the Okobo Community.
While the actual cause of the misunderstanding could not immediately be ascertained in the face of conspiracy theories, an eyewitness and unfortunate victim of the crisis however said it may not be unconnected with grievances between two or three persons that escalated. It was gathered that the two sister villages have coexisted for as long as the history of Okobo Local Government Area.
Present at the reconciliation Visit and Peace talk with the Deputy Speaker include former Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Chief Barr Ekpenyong Ntekim, Chairman of Okobo LGA, Dr. Sylvester Attah, Vice-chairman, Rt.
Hon. Asuquo Koffi, PDP Chapter Chairman, Mr. Eteka Ukpong, SA to the Governor on Projects Monitoring, Mr.Bassey Pius Bassey
among others
